Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Bait-and-Switch Tyrant: Mr. Swaggart initially seems the typical Bad Boss. However, see Jerk with a Heart of Gold below:
  • A Day in the Limelight: Who else ... Carrie. It would turn out to be her only one. The Greenbush twins lacked professional acting skill like their peers, making this episode a rare gamble with a double performance that had mixed reception.
  • Giant Spider: A giant insect threatens Carrie during one of of her Imagine Spots.
  • Imaginary Friend: Carrie invents a friend named Alyssa when nobody will play with her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Mr. Swaggart, the Mean Boss at the telephone installment operation. He often yells at his employees for no reason, alienating Jonathan to the point of openly disliking him and forces the men to wake up and start working half an hour early, but it's all so they can finish the job before the deadline, which would grant them a much-needed bonus. When an unforeseen accident seemingly foils their plans to finish the work before time's up and Charles and Jonathan offer a solution (organizing the men to do the work the injured horses were going to and working at night before the deadline), Swaggart not only allows them to try but participates in the operation, helping making sure the men get their much-deserved bonus.
  • Oh, Crap!: Shaughnessy's reaction when he realizes that the boiler where he was secretly making whiskey is about to blow. Also when his boss yells his name after the explosion.
  • Race Against the Clock: An accident puts the men's chances at finishing the telephone lines in time at risk when one of the horses are crushed by a falling tree, so Charles and Jonathan suggest that they join forces to do the horses' job and fix the fallen pole and finish the job before midnight. They make it.
