Recap / Leverage: Redemption S 2 E 4 "The Date Night Job"

Go To

Parker and Hardison plan to rob a high-security vault for their date night, but they run into trouble when another crew of thieves attempt to rob the same building at the same time.

Tropes stolen in this job:

  • Continuity Nod: Spirit's Ruse experienced a resurgence in popularity after the events of "The Card Game Job". As a result, there is now a Pokémon GO-esque mobile game based on it.
    • When Parker arrives at their date, the first thing Hardison offers is pretzels.
  • Frame-Up: Richfield plans to blame Mason's murder on his henchmen, who have no idea of his real intentions.
  • Heist Clash: Parker and Hardison attempt to rob the vault of a deceased philanthropist during a party in her honor. However, another crew of thieves break into the building with the intent of stealing from the vault as well.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Team Leverage wind up locking Richfield in the same vault where he'd confined Mason, although they point out that he has plenty of air and the police are already on their way.
  • Inheritance Murder: Richfield plans to kill Mason so that Mason's grandmother's will is invalidated and he, Richfield, can inherit the fortune that would otherwise have gone to the boy.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: The entire robbery is a circuitous plan to kill off Mason while making it look like a tragic accident. Richfield makes sure Mason wanders down to the vault area, at which point Nick and his crew capture Mason, force him to use his hand to open the vault's biometric lock, and then put him inside to keep him out of the way while they move the loot. Then Farmington pulls the fire alarm in order to reverse the HVAC system so that the air is drained out of the vaults and Mason suffocates. Had the plan worked, it would look like Mason had accidentally died despite nobody actually trying to kill him. Fortunately, the Leverage team is able to get Mason out of the vault in time.
  • Offscreen Breakup: Breanna is no longer dating Emily. She says that this is because Emily had a chance to get a really good job, but the job would come with government scrutiny and Breanna was worried that her presence might derail Emily's career.
  • Understanding Girlfriend: Once Breanna explains to Ally why she has to keep bailing on their date (without getting into the specifics of what she and the crew actually do), Ally understands, encourages Breanna to go help her family, and agrees to reschedule the date for a less chaotic time.
  • Would Hurt a Child: The whole point of Richfield's Evil Plan is to get Mason out of the way so he can get the boy's inheritance thanks to a survivor clause.
