Recap / Leverage: Redemption S 2 E 12 "The Museum Makeover Job"

Go To

The crew flies to London to examine how a Leverage International heist went wrong, but once there they find themselves dealing with multiple enemies from Sophie's past—including her stepdaughter, now an Interpol detective who is determined to bring Sophie to justice.

Tropes stolen in this job:

  • Ambiguous Situation: Sophie's not sure if her estranged stepdaughter could recognize her in person. They meet face to face later in the episode while Sophie is in a Paper-Thin Disguise, and it's not quite clear if Astrid knew who she was talking to.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: Sophie's stepdaughter is an incredibly tenacious detective who opposes the team.
  • Arch-Enemy: Astrid has been chasing Parker for years, and they each consider the other their nemesis.
  • Batman Gambit: Arthur set up the first failed heist in order to the draw the attention of the main Leverage crew, and ensured that Astrid (Sophie's stepdaughter) would investigate by mentioning Ramsey's involvement. Sophie would take the opportunity to take down Ramsey and the team's entire con is used to distract everyone, including themselves, from the crown that Arthur steals. In one fell swoop, Arthur takes down Ramsey, steals the crown, and frames Sophie for the whole thing: the cherry on top is that there is a good chance that Astrid will be the one to arrest the Leverage crew.
  • Big Bad Friend: The London team's failure turns out to have been caused by Arthur as part of a complicated gambit to destroy both Ramsey and Sophie, whom he blames for letting him go to jail many years ago.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the Leverage crew stuck inside the museum as the alarms are activated and the police are swarming the building. Meanwhile Ramsey has escaped with the crown and set the crew up to take the fall.
  • Demolitions Expert: Eliot poses as the bomb disposal guy to clear out the museum.
  • Evil Mentor: Ramsey was this to Sophie and Arthur.
  • Four Lines, All Waiting: played for laughs:
Parker: I have a lot of nemesises - I just don't have time to nemesis them all back.
  • Parental Substitute: Implied, between Sophie and Astrid back in the day. Billy even describes Astrid as Sophie's "little girl."
  • Resolved Noodle Incident: We finally learn what happened with Sophie's "little royal scandal" mentioned in Leverage: Sophie married the Duke of Hanover so that Ramsey and his crew could rob him blind, and became genuinely close to him and his young daughter in the process. When the crime was exposed, she ran off, leaving a distraught William to drink himself to death and ruining his daughter's life.
  • Trial Run Crime: Ramsey hires the London Leverage team to steal a Zambian royal scepter, a task they fail due to the unexpected presence of Interpol. It turns out that the job was a test run to see what kind of security the museum had and Ramsey's real target are some Greek death masks, one of which he forged and could potentially lead to him being exposed.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Billy takes a hit from Ramsey meant for Sophie, which was hard enough to knock him down. It's also implied that he was violent toward Sophie in the past: she describes him as "brilliant but terrifying" and tells him that he taught her "how to survive [him]" rather than simply how to survive in the criminal world.
