Recap / Legends of Tomorrow S6E8 "Stressed Western"

Go To

With Sara back, the Legends go after an alien in the Wild West to get back into the normal swing of things. Unfortunately, they have to deal with various personal problems that have built up over the season.

Tropes:

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Gender inverted. Zari accuses Behrad of always pursuing bad girls, which he disputes.
  • Bait-and-Switch: It looks like insulting a tavern resident is going to lead to a Bar Brawl...and instead he smiles to buy drinks for the gang.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Spooner and Astra save Nate from the Haverack.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Stapleton lands one on Sara from behind in their duel... and then she heals and stands up.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Nate brings up how he tried to keep everyone together during Sara's disappearance.
    • Nate reminds the team about Sweet Baby James and the Thong Song.
    • Nate rants that he tried to get a seat at the Hall of Justice, but wasn't called back.
  • Cowboy Episode: As is common for the series, though Jonah Hex doesn't show up this time.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Levi Stapleton, the episode's apparent villain, is killed about halfway into the episode.
  • Gold Fever: The townspeople are getting rich from the gold the worm leaves behind so they tolerate the fact that it will eat people from time to time. When Marshall Reeves tries to stop the worm, they turn on him and later turn on the Legends for the same reason.
  • Healing Factor: Sara's headshot wound immediately heals up.
  • Historical Domain Character: The Legends encounter Bass Reeves, as played by David Ramsey. Averted with Levi Stapleton and Fist City in general, which are both entirely fictional.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Nate loses it due to everybody's constant bickering, they then try to calm him down.
  • Identical Stranger: This episode has two examples and in both cases is vague about which of these tropes is at play.
    • Bass Reeves looks almost exactly like John Diggle except with a bushy mustache. This is lampshaded by Sara when she sees him for the first time and mistakes him for Diggle.
    • Levi Stapleton looks exactly like General Kilgore from Bay of Squids.
  • Interactive Narrator: The singing cowboy, who initially appears to be simply Fist City's local entertainer — but as the episode goes on, his songs begin to describe events he shouldn't have any knowledge of. He even shows up on the Waverider at the end, singing about what the Legends are off to do next. Despite this, he's clearly a character in the episode, as several others react to his presence.
Ava: [exasperated] Guys, I told you we can't keep the cowboy narrator!
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Ava tells Sara about the adventures they've had during her absence.
    • Sara tells Ava and eventually the rest of the team that she is an alien hybrid clone.
    • Constantine tells Gary about losing his magic.
  • Karmic Death: The Haverack consumes Stapleton.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: This is Legends, so of course.
    • Nate calls this mission a "normal Legends romp."
    • The Omniscient Singing Cowboy Narrator stares into the camera more and more as the episode goes on and even takes scene transitions into account for his performance.
  • Most Common Card Game: A resident of Fist City invites Astra to play Go Fish.
  • Nigh-Invulnerable: The Haverack's shell is called impenetrable by Gary. Astra kills it by superheating the shell, bypassing that defense.
  • Only Sane Man: Nate tries to calm down the rest of the Legends, who keep bickering despite the danger of the Haverack. Until he loses it himself.
  • Out of Focus: Mick only has 2 very short scenes.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Nate gives one to Sara, Ava, Behrad, Zari, John, and Gary, venting about everything from them being unable to stop arguing for long enough to finish the mission to them being terrible roommates.
  • Sand Worm: The Haverack, which eats angry people and makes gold, living in a gold lode cavern and producing literal Solid Gold Poop.
  • Secret-Keeper: Ava for Sara, but only very briefly, as Sara being a clone is revealed to the team during the course of the episode.
  • Sugar Bowl: Fist City appears to be this at first with the friendly demeanor of citizens and general outlawing of anything that isn't "PG", which contradicts Nate's explanation for what the town is historically known as. It turns out their rules are to prevent people from getting angry and disturbing the Haverack (which will devour them), which provides them with gold from its Solid Gold Poop.
  • This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: After Gary tells him about the Fountain of Imperium, John leaves Zari behind to reclaim his magic alone.
  • Town with a Dark Secret: Fist City puts up an overly cheerful facade to hide from the fact that they have a man-eating Haverack who is drawn in by anger. But thanks to the gold it is producing, they at first try to stop the Legends from getting rid of it.
  • Villain Holds the Leash: Stapleton controls the Haverack with a whistle.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Stapleton keeps angrily shooting Sara after she gets up, shouting this. It leads to the Haverack eating him.
  • The Wild West: Where the Legends travel this week.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: Stapleton is eaten by the Haverack, seemingly ending the entire conflict, until the townspeople of Fist City point their guns at the Legends, because they don't want to give the Haverack up.
