Tropes

  • Ascended Meme: Nate remarks that he and Zari 1.0 probably had a cool couple name, like "Steelhacker", the most used ship name for Nate and Zari in the Legends fandom.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Charlie cuts off Atropos's hand, which is gripping Sara's leg, both sending her flying into the time stream and allowing the Legends to reclaim the Loom pieces she was wearing on that hand.
  • Ax-Crazy: Charlie describes Atropos as enjoying her role of cutting threads from the Loom of Fate (i.e. ending lives), and she needlessly slaughters innocent people in 1977 London while trying to find Charlie.
  • Back for the Dead: Charlie's bandmates from The Smell are slaughtered by Atropos.
  • Bad with the Bone: Atropos fights using daggers made out of bone and she's shown pulling them from her forearm.
  • Brown Note: Laying eyes on Atropos' true form burns people alive from the inside out, although on Sara, it only knocks her out.
  • The Bus Came Back: The original Zari returns during Zari 2.0's totem quest.
  • Call-Back:
    • Charlie warned the Legends that seeing a Fate's true form is too much for a human to handle and would be deadly. We get to see that in action on one of her former bandmates.
    • Zari briefly hallucinates a cat, which appears to be the same one she was turned into when Charlie and Constantine broke history last season.
  • Celebrity Paradox: The blatant Supernatural references and especially Sara mentioning that she's a fan of the show raises some interesting questions considering the fact that Katie Cassidy (Dinah Laurel Lance, Sara's sister) was a main cast member during its third season, while Osric Chau (Ryan Choi, Sara's fellow Paragon during the Crisis) is also a recurring cast member since its seventh season. There's also the fact that other cast members have guested like Lexa Doig (Talia Al-Ghul), Gary Chalk (Gen. Walker), Aaron Douglas (Russell Glosson), Jewel Staite (Dr. Bryce), and Sebastian Roché (Dr. Ethan Campbell).
  • The Cynic: When Charlie tries to bring up good things that have resulted from humans having free will, Atropos counters with a cold listing of humanity's atrocities, clearly considering that the true measure of free will.
  • Dramatic Irony: Discussing the previous timeline where Zari was a Legend, she, Nate and Behrad all presume that the latter was alive and they were a Brother–Sister Team. She eventually learns this was not the case. And just after the old Zari is so excited to hear that her brother survived in this timeline, he gets killed by Atropos.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Charlie, due to her sisters' actions.
  • The Evils of Free Will: Atropos gives a whole Breaking Speech to Charlie about how giving humans control of their own lives has only led to things like genocide, environmental damage and systematic incarceration.
  • Fake Crossover: In the most literal sense possible: the Legends wander across a filming location for Supernatural while in British Columbia, and at one point poke around the Impala.
  • Fantastic Racism: Atropos looks down on humanity for, in her eyes, creating chaos with their free will.
  • Heroic BSoD: Charlie breaks down and indulges in Drowning My Sorrows when she finds out her old True Companions The Smell were killed, especially because Charlie knew it was her sister Atropos.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Atropos nails Charlie to a tree through both shoulders with her daggers.
  • Implacable Man: Atropos shrugs off most of the heroes' attempts at stopping her; she outfights Constantine and Sara, all but ignores being impaled with Genghis Khan's sword, and it's implied that even being thrown into the timestream is just a temporary setback.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Just like his Earth-74 counterpart, Mick Rory melts at the sight of a newborn child, in this case his own daughter.
  • Idiot Ball: Charlie either doesn't mention or forgets that Atropos is also a shapeshifter, assuming that John managed to escape from Atropos when he emerges from their battle seemingly unharmed.
  • Kick the Dog: Atropos needlessly slaughters people at a The Smell concert, even going the extra mile of burning Declan alive with her true form. Later in the episode, she tries to kill Sara the same way, tortures Charlie to force her to surrender the Loom piece (taunting her as being "nothing" when Charlie proudly affirms herself as a Legend), and kills Behrad even when it's clear that he's no match for her.
  • Kill and Replace: Atropos stabs John, leaving him for dead, and shapeshifts into his form to trick Charlie into leading her to the Loom piece. It works, though John managed to survive his injuries.
  • Killed Offscreen: The Supernatural film crew were found already dead halfway through the episode.
Sara: If they’re dead, who’s shooting season 15?
  • Lack of Empathy:
    • John doesn't give Charlie much time to mourn over her bandmates' deaths.
    • Atropos kills without blinking, doesn't care a fig for Charlie's objections to their role as Fates, and even tortures her sister to get a piece of the Loom, all without a hint of emotion beyond contempt for humanity.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Ava points out how similar Mick and his daughter are.
  • Mood Whiplash: Mick's attempts to reconnect with his daughter is immediately followed by Sara's team having their first encounter with the ruthless Atropos.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: John's rash actions lead to him, Charlie and Sara being stranded and ultimately Atropos killing Behrad. Zari promises him that she will not let him out of her sights until they find the Loom and bring him back to life.
  • No-Sell:
    • Downplayed, but Sara is somehow not completely killed by seeing Atropos's true form.
    • Atropos in turn is immune to the immortal-killing effects of Genghis Khan's sword.
  • Not Quite Dead:
  • Other Me Annoys Me: The pre-retcon Zari is initially annoyed at how self-centered the current version is, but they quickly bond.
  • Pet the Dog: Atropos threatens Zari's life to get Behrad to give up the Loom piece, but she still spares Zari after getting what she wants, even when Behrad tries to kill her.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Charlie, before cutting off Atropos's hand and sending her flying into the timestream.
    Fate's a bitch, innit?
  • The Resenter: Mick's daughter is quite angry with him for always bailing on her. After a bunch of gifts don't work, Mick finally musters up the courage to apologize to her.
  • The Reveal: Astra's Evil Mentor (the Coin Maker) is actually Charlie's sister, Lachesis.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Sara does this after Atropos kills Behrad, while Charlie helps.
  • Shapeshifting: Atropos is capable of it too and impersonates John after leaving him for dead.
  • Shipper on Deck: Everybody is pushing Zari and Nate to get together.
  • Shout-Out: The Legends stumble across a film set for Supernatural (which it turns out Sara is a big fan of).
  • Sleepwalking: Zari ends up in Nate's bed due to it.
  • Tempting Fate: While pinned to a tree by Atropos, Charlie defiantly tells her that she'll never find the other Loom pieces. Then to Charlie's horror the Waverider shows up (with it the piece the Legends procured the previous episode).
  • Third Line, Some Waiting: The A Plot is about Atropos going after the Loom. The B Plot is about Zari's Vision Quest. The C Plot is Ava trying to help Mick to bond with his estranged daughter.
  • Thrown Out the Airlock: While Atropos shrugs off everything the Legends throw at her throughout the episode, they finally defeat her by tossing her out the Waverider into the timestream, though given she is a Physical God, she is still implied to be alive.
  • Villain Has a Point: Atropos isn't exactly wrong when she points out that atrocities like genocide, environmental devastation, and systematic incarceration are all a result of humanity's free will.
  • Vision Quest: Zari goes on one into the wind totem and meets her pre-Cosmic Retcon self.
  • Wham Episode: Behrad is killed by Atropos.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Atropos is shocked that Sara somehow survived seeing her true form, and demands to know what she is. Sara responds with your worst nightmare. (It's not clear how Sara did this; it may be related to her defying fate by dying and coming back to life, using the Spear of Destiny to rewrite reality, and/or being the Paragon of Destiny.)
  • The Worf Effect: Sara, an experienced fighter, gets her ass handed to her by Atropos.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are:
    • Sara encourages Charlie, as nobody is responsible for the family they are born into and Charlie chose to be a better person.
    • The old Zari encourages the new one, as despite her self-absorbed attire, she senses the good person inside.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Behrad ends up dead, much like he did in the previous timeline. Atropos, while killing him, invokes this by saying "No more defying fate".
