Recap / Legacies S2E5 "Screw Endgame"

Go To

Lizzie confronts Hope in the town square about keeping her return a secret and tells her she needs to tell the truth to Landon, as Josie plans to sleep with him that night after an 80's themed dance at the school. A woman then appears from the portal to Malivore, calling herself the Keeper of the Game. She sends the two girls into what appears to be an old-school videogame. She explains that they're in a labyrinth and will be hunted down and killed by a minotaur. They keep dying and restarting until they know most of the traps in the maze. Their only chance to survive is for one of them to agree to become the next Keeper. Eventually, Lizzie knocks Hope out and tells the Keeper she will do it as long as Hope survives, but the Keeper explains that there's no way for both of the girls to survive. Lizzie smashes the Keeper's bracelet and then helps Hope kill the minotaur, freeing the girls and the Keeper. They rush to the dance, but Hope changes her mind about stopping Landon and Josie, seeing how happy they are. She decides to try to move on and goes to party with Raf. Landon and Josie are about to get it on, then Landon realizes he forgot to bring a condom and rushes off. In the meantime, Josie finds Penelope's magical diary and finds a love poem Landon wrote to Hope before she jumped into Malivore. Assuming him to be hiding his feelings towards Hope from her (and not realizing he doesn't remember writing the poem), she calls off the sex. Alaric tells Vardemus that he won't interfere with his teaching methods as long as he takes care of his daughters. Vardemus is then revealed to be Ryan Clarke in disguise, who seemingly kills the former Keeper.

In the meantime, MG comes to Kaleb and tells him about Sebastian. Apparently, Sebastian's body lies desiccated in a coffin under the school. Them accidentally spilling some blood on the body reawakened Sebastian enough to astrally project himself first to Lizzie and then to MG. Alaric is against awakening an unknown vampire, who was clearly punished for something. Kaleb agrees that they need to learn the truth first, but MG wants to wake him up because Sebastian promised him Lizzie. Kaleb tricks Sebastian into revealing his murderous ways and resolves to burn the body after the dance. However, Sebastian tricks another student named Wade and is then shown to be fully revived.

  • Becoming the Genie: A variation as the Keeper explains how the only way someone can escape this whole labyrinth is to find someone to take her place as the Keeper. Thus, it's been one woman after another forcing someone to become the new Keeper so they can escape and "every woman for herself." She's shocked when Hope and Lizzie find a new way to get out of it.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The arrow that keeps narrowly missing Hope and Lizzie every time, loosed by someone named Frank, is later used by Lizzie to wound the minotaur, when she borrows Frank's bow.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: According to the Keeper, the labyrinth was created by a sorcerer, who got rejected by a young woman. He had her trapped in the labyrinth to be chased by a minotaur as punishment. The only way to be free is to pass on the Keeper's bracelet to the next young maiden. When Lizzie learns of this, she smashes the bracelet because "it's a tool of the patriarchy."
  • The '80s: The theme of the school dance. Also, the Keeper is from that decade, so her version of the Labyrinth is chock-full of 80's references, including old-school videogames.
  • The Game Come to Life: The Labyrinth Hope and Lizzie are stuck in is designed like a videogame, with clear triggers and a single respawn point. Whenever they die, they reappear in the town square, and attempts to reach the school lead them back to the square.
  • Insistent Terminology: The Keeper insists that what Lizzie and Hope are trapped in isn't a maze, it's a labyrinth. Hope realizes why: mazes can have multiple exits, a Labyrinth has only one.
    • Invoked when the Keeper says Hope will be "set free from the eternal pain of the labyrinth." Lizzie notes how "that was very carefully worded" and the Keeper admits "she dies, ok?"
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Before, Sebastian could only project himself into Lizzie and then MG's minds. After Kaleb fed his body some blood to get him to appear to Kaleb, Sebastian is able to make himself appear to Wade, who is tricked into helping him.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: When Lizzie says she'll never try to force someone to take her place as Keeper one day, the Keeper just chuckles "I told myself the exact same thing."
  • The Reveal:
    • Headmaster Vardemus is really Ryan Clarke in disguise.
    • Josie's dark magic spell from the previous episode is what restored Lizzie's memory of Hope.
    • Josie voted to remove Alaric as headmaster. She explains that it was to get him to move on and have a life of his own, to stop worrying about her and Lizzie. Kaleb was the only one who voted to keep him.
  • Special Edition Title: The show's title is pixelated and features 80's videogame animation.
  • Take a Third Option: The Keeper gives the girls two choices: they can both die when the minotaur catches them, or one of them can agree to become the next Keeper, although the other one still dies. Lizzie and Hope instead kill the minotaur, freeing all three women.
  • Wham Shot: Headmaster Vardemus taking off his ring and turning into Ryan Clarke, before seemingly killing the former Keeper.
