Recap / Legacies S1E2 "Some People Just Want to Watch the World Burn"

Go To

Alaric, Hope and Rafael hit the road in search of Landon, who's sudden disappearance has raised some suspicion. Meanwhile, during an annual flag football game against Mystic Falls High, Lizzie and Josie's plan to stay under the radar quickly gets derailed after Penelope gets involved.

  • Attack Its Weak Point: Dorion researches what little dragon law he can find and learns that dragons have a weak spot you have to stab to kill it. At the end of the episode Alaric stabs the dragon lady in her glowing throat right before she breathes fire and kills her with Hope noting that they found the weak spot.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The episode seems to imply that Landon using the knife is what incinerates the bus passengers. It turns out the knife doesn't have that power. A dragon does, though.
  • The Gloves Come Off: Lizzie was willing to put up with the abuse from the other team like she does every year in order to not blow the schools cover. However once Dana makes fun of her mental issues and mocks her for not taking medication she decides to say screw it to the schools cover and tells everyone else on the team to use their abilities.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Lizzie and Josie insist that the Salvatore School flag football team deliberately lose in order to avoid attracting attention. Eventually, Lizzie and the others decide to win regardless, while keeping their true abilities hidden, but Josie sabotages their efforts in the end.
  • Jerk Jock: The Mystic Falls football team are all giant jerkasses who either physically or emotionally abuse the Salvatore School Stallions over the course of the game.
  • Long Game: When MG tells Penelope that listening to her advice isn't getting him any closer to getting together with Lizzie she tells him that they are playing the long game and notes that dating her nemesis Dana is a good first step towards his goal.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: At the end of the episode, a statue turns out to be an actual gargoyle.
  • Not Quite Dead: Twice over with the dragon lady. First Hope and Rafael work together to stab the dragon in the heart but this only stops her temporarily and she soon goes One-Winged Angel. Then Hope uses the death spell on her and, while it does do damage, it isn't enough to kill her. It's only after Alaric stabs her in the throat the the dragon goes down for good.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: The mute lady turns out to be a dragon, not a fire witch. She can breathe fire and is attracted to anything shiny (e.g. jewelry, smartphones, the knife) or valuable (they find a pile of wallets in her den). Eventually she goes full One-Winged Angel and turns into a large dragon.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Considering that most supernatural threats in the prior series have either been vampires, werewolves or witches, Alaric is understandably thrown off when it turns out their supposed pyromancer is actually a dragon, a species that isn't supposed to exist outside of fiction. He believes at the end of the episode that this is a sign of things to come and wonders if he is supposed to protect his students from creatures that aren't supposed to exist.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The episode's title is a reference to Alfred's description of the Joker in The Dark Knight.
    • When Dorion replies what he knows about dragons from the lore Alaric sarcastically asks if he got his information from Game of Thrones. Dorion replies that he got the information from Puff the Magic Dragon.
  • Title Drop: Penelope drops the episodes title when MG questions why she would want to help him get together with Lizzie considering she hates her.
  • Undying Loyalty: Rafael refuses to believe that Landon is evil and goes with Hope and Alaric to find him since he's worried that he wont be given his due otherwise. After escaping the dragon Rafael also leaves with Landon instead of returning to the school.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Alaric calls Hope out when he finds out that she brought a black magic death spell with the intent on using it on Landon.
