Recap / Learning How to Be a Princess Chapter 3 "Going To Town"

Go To

After spending a few days around the castle, Luz sets her sights on exploring Bonesborough.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Berserk Button: While Belos demands respect, he hates groveling, throwing whoever does it into a spike pit.
  • Cassandra Truth:
    • Zig-Zagged. When Luz accidentally introduces herself to Amity as "Noceda-Belos", the latter thinks that this human shouting in her ear is playing a weird joke that could get her petrified... but only for a few seconds. Watching Luz awkwardly fumble through a response makes her realize she really is speaking to the princess.
    • Played straight when Luz describes the human realm, only for Amity to think that she's making it up.
  • Friendly Rivalry: After being insulted by Amity, Luz responds that she intends to turn their sudden rivalry into this trope, hoping they can be friends.
  • In Spite of a Nail: While their meeting goes differently than in canon, it remains a bad first impression that has Amity still start off hating Luz.
Amity: I hope you understand, this doesn't make us friends. I don't care if you're the Princess of the Isles, you didn't work hard to train under Lilith as I did, your father just told her to train you. You are my competition and I do not lose. I am better than you, especially compared to a half-a-witch like you.
  • Noodle Incident: Belos once passed a law criminalizing cannibalism, but doing so somehow created worse problems, so he had to repeal it.
  • Older Than They Look: Lilith internally admits that she was surprised that Belos had a daughter in spite of how old he was, thinking that he was nothing but a skeleton beneath his mask and robes.
  • Orphaned Setup: Somehow Luz came into the throne room by falling from the ceiling with a hurt ankle, and Belos having to catch her with his magic. While he does ask how this happened, she doesn't give him an answer, instead changing the subject to what she wanted to ask him.
  • Pose of Supplication: When Luz does this when begging Lilith to take her into town, Lilith begs her to stop, worried what Belos would do if he saw her like that.
