Written By Patrick Harbinson

Directed By Constantine Makris

Detectives probe the alleged rape of a teenage girl (Amanda Seyfried) by a group of army cadets. However, further revelations in the press suggest that the girl is lying about the assault.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguous Ending: Tandi's rapist is found not guilty, no doubt caused by the Victim of the Week constantly changing stories and her promiscuous behavior being known. Still, because she went through with her testimony, she inspired another rape victim to come forward (and it's implied that SVU will pursue her rape case too).
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Mike Tucker was ultimately acquitted of rape due to Tandi recounting her statements twice. Subverted when another victim comes forward, giving the SVU another chance to arrest him.
  • Big Bad Friend: Mike Tucker was an Honorary Uncle to Tandi, until he rapes her.
  • Chekhov's Gunman:
    • Mike Tucker was interviewed by the detectives midway through the episode before The Reveal that he's the Villain of the Week.
    • During the final court scene, a young woman sitting behind Elliot is given some focus. She reappears in the closing scene and comes out as another victim of Mike Tucker.
  • Double Standard: Olivia vocally disagrees with the other detectives about arresting Tandi once she confesses in national television that she wasn't raped. While she sees a victim, the detectives see a criminal who falsely accused innocent men and nearly caused the death of one in the process. When she suggests Tandi is still protecting her real rapist and is asked who that person could be, Olivia immediately points at her stepfather and the following interrogation has Olivia pressuring Tandi into naming him as her rapist.
  • Event Title: Refers to the public exposure the case got due to a number of circumstances.
  • False Rape Accusation: Tandi mentions the military students she's dancing with were her rapists out of fear of the real one threatening not only her but her stepdad (he is his boss).
  • Graceful Loser: Tandi knew full well of the Surprisingly Realistic Outcome of her trial. When Olivia feels sorry for her after, Tandi replies "don't be".
  • Missing White Woman Syndrome: Brutally deconstructed. This trope hurts everyone. Anyone who isn't "young, cute, and white" is told that their lives are meaningless. Meanwhile those the media deems worthy of attention have their lives ruined by being subjected to intense attention and scrutiny that they never asked for.
  • One-Steve Limit: The Villain of the Week, Mike Tucker, has the same last name as recurring Hero Antagonist Ed Tucker of Internal Affairs.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Stabler's accusations against the stepfather during his interrogation earns him a broken nose. He finds it hard to suspect the man afterwards, as he admits, if he was accused of raping his daughters, he would've responded with his fist too.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: Tandi ends up destroying her credibility with the jury and her rapist walks free. However, her testimony inspires another one of Tucker's victims to come forward and report her rape to the SVU, and the episode ends on the note that they have another chance to bring Tucker to justice.
  • Red Herring: The military students were the initial primary suspects of Tandi's rape. The lads are innocent and have nothing to do with it (aside from being eye witnesses).
  • Rule of Symbolism: Because of Stabler's talk with a friend who's a reporter, the names of rape suspects ended up in the papers. When one of the suspects is heckled and got in an accident, Stabler checks for a pulse and gets blood on his hands... literally and figuratively.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Tandi recanting her statements twice ultimately destroys her credibility to the jury, and Mike Tucker was acquitted.
