A 20-year-old woman, who apparently jumped from the balcony of a prominent family's home, turns out to have been murdered to protect their reputation.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Candace Lamerly raised her grandson (after presumably driving his mother away) to be violent and sexually aggressive to women. And judging by the way she casually passes the blame onto her own son, Drew's father, it can be assumed she was no better with him.
    • Drew and his grandmother try to invoke this trope in regards to Drew's father, claiming he was the one who was violent and manipulative of Drew. But it turns out to be a lie to protect Candace's reputation.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Once again, grandma Candace.
  • Evil Matriarch: Candace Lamerly turns out to be this.
  • Evil Mentor: Candace teaches her own grandson to be violent and sexually aggressive with women.
  • Evil Old Folks: Candace Lamerly, the elderly matriarch of the Lamerly family, is rotten to the core.
  • High-Class Call Girl: Elliot and Olivia spontaneously raided a brothel posing as a dormitory looking for Jenny White, who used to work there.
  • Female Misogynist: Candace Lamerly, as evidenced by how she raises her grandson Drew to abuse women and view them as property he could do whatever he wanted with.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Jenny White
  • Lie Detector: Drew is tested on the polygraph, but Dr. Huang instantly suspects Drew managed to beat the test.
  • Nice Guy: Jenny's rich husband, even though he doesn't appear much, turns out to be a decent guy. He not only knows about his wife's past as a prostitute, but never bothered her over it, and is supportive of Jenny when she agrees to testify about her rape.
  • Oh, Crap!: Both Drew and Candace share this look when Jenny White enters the courtroom with her husband, realizing that they have no control over her now.
  • Rags to Riches: Jenny White becomes Happily Married to a rich and powerful man sometime after her unpleasant date with Drew.
  • Rape as Backstory: Jenny White was raped by Drew Lamerly during his prom.
  • Rich Bitch: The Lamerlies, in particular, Candace and Drew, are rich, powerful, and unpleasant. Candace taught her own grandson how to rape women and use their wealth and privilege to get away with murder. She then tries to set up her own son in order to help her grandson evade justice.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Candace and Drew Lamerly bribe their way through everything.
  • Shout-Out: Jenny White entering the courtroom where Drew is testifying at is similar to The Godfather Part II. In that film, Michael Corleone had Frank Pentangeli's brother flown in from Italy to sit in on the Senate hearings Frank was testifying at. The very presence of Pentangeli's brother made Frank abruptly recant incriminating information he had on Michael out of fear of shaming his family's reputation. Similarly, it is Jenny's very presence that leads to Candice and Drew realizing they have no control over her and also leads to Drew's angry breakdown on the stand.
  • Villainous Breakdown:
    • Drew flies into a rage in a courtroom and tries to attack Cabot, blaming her for his grandmother's apparent heart attack. It's this public display of unbridled rage that no doubt destroys his credibility and defense.
    • Candace loses her temper in the end when she realizes her own son has ratted her out to the police and proceeds to berate him as the detectives arrest her.
  • Wham Line: Jenny White's final statement as she's giving her statement to the police about Drew, in response to the claim that his father took him to the brothel:
Jenny: No...that was the sickest thing about Drew. He came with his grandmother. She picked his girls for him.
