Tropes

  • Actor Allusion:
    • Amaro's currently working for a company that solves cold cases, which Benson says seems like a good fit for him.
    • Andrea Malone mentions she wanted to be a writer. The actress playing her, Victoria Pollack, actually works in the SVU writers room and co-wrote the episode "Turn Me On Take Me Private".
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Burton Lowe. He initially seems like an Old Flame of Olivia's, but turns out to have used his power to coerce several younger women into having sex with him; his previous relationship with Olivia also fits a pattern of grooming that he would later go on to have with those women.
  • The Bus Came Back: Danny Pino (Nick Amaro), Peter Hermann (Trevor Langan), Tamara Tunie (Melinda Warner), and Dann Florek (Donald Cragen) all make a return in this episode.
    • Additionally, Tony Campisi makes an appearance as Defense Attorney Steve Roth for the first time since season 17's "Catfishing Teacher".
  • Call-Back:
    • Burton Lowe was Serena Benson's student who Olivia had a relationship with when she was sixteen and he was twenty-one. She told Stabler about him in "Wanderlust" and Casey Novak in "Intoxicated".
    • Olivia mentions she went on a romantic trip to Paris with someone. The person she is referring to is Ed Tucker, who suggested they go on that trip in the episode "Heartfelt Passages".
  • Continuity Nod: Warner mentions a medical examiner Rodgers who worked on the case in 1996, likely a reference to Elizabeth Rodgers who appeared in both the original Law & Order and SVU.
  • Halfway Plot Switch: The episode initially seems to be about solving Haley West's rape and murder from 1996, but halfway through it switches to be about the multiple women accusing Burton Lowe of assaulting them.
  • So Proud of You: When Olivia's on the phone with Cragen:
Olivia: Will do, Captain. Thank you.
Cragen: Well, thank you...Captain. You don't know how proud it makes me to say that.
  • Stock Footage: Olivia's flashbacks concerning her mother and Burton Lowe are lifted from "Payback", "Wanderlust", and "Intoxicated".
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: Amaro does this after realizing that Burton Lowe used him to get back in Olivia's life.
    Amaro: I'm angry right now.
