Tropes

  • Bittersweet Ending: Stanton is declared not guilty due to him suffering from CTE, but he kills himself in front of his wife and the detectives.
  • Driven to Suicide: After being declared not guilty, Jake Stanton grabs a cop’s gun and shoots himself.
  • Happily Married: Zigzagged. It’s clear that Stanton’s wife loves him and is supporting him during his trial. However, the stress of taking care of her husband is taking its toll on her.
  • Inspector Javert: Amaro refuses to consider the possibility that Stanton suffers from diminished capacity.
  • Jerkass Ball: After Stanton breaks down in court, Alex couldn't care less that the jury now has the information they need to render a just verdict. All she cares about is that Ellis's tactics made her look bad. While Alex always hates getting caught off guard in court, she has never shown such little regard for justice as she did in this episode.
  • Non-Answer: Rollins tells the undercover officer playing a teenage prostitute that it's how Rollins made detective. Fin asks Rollins if that's actually true. Rollins doesn't answer, and Stanton's appearance on the surveillance cameras brings the conversation to a quick end.
  • One-Steve Limit: The Victim of the Week is named Vicki Harris. The episode "Behave" had a Victim of the Week with the first name Vicki and a Villain of the Week with the last name Harris.
  • Smart People Know Latin: Amaro rattles off a translation of a long Latin sentence for Benson and Cabot's benefit ("Actus non facit reum nisi mens sit rea"), and a totally unimpressed Cabot replies that she already knew what it meant.
  • Stepford Smiler: Stanton is a Type A. He pretends to be a happy-go-lucky guy, but he knows there’s something wrong with him. When he’s interviewed, he’s clearly realizing that he will be remembered for this trial and decides he can’t live like this anymore.
