Go To

The detectives investigate the death of Brittany Janaway, a 14-year-old model. The investigation leads them to Baltimore.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Amoral Attorney: Leslie Drake is this in spades, what with the way he broadcasts the case in the media, constantly interferes with the police investigation, and puts a bounty on a murder suspect (in the guise of a reward).
  • Bad Boss: Paul Delacourte, the designer of the show Brittany was supposed to appear in. He thinks very little of the models who work for him and in his Establishing Character Moment, he's seen verbally abusing them and his assistants.
  • Call-Back: Briscoe brings up the fact he slept with Munch's ex-wife.
  • CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: Averted - Dr. Janaway is seen performing this on his daughter, but he's unable to revive her.
  • Crossover: This episode is part 1 of a storyline that concludes in the Homicide: Life on the Street episode also entitled "Baby It's You".
  • Death of a Child:
    • The victim of the week is 14 years old.
    • Curtis had a sister who died at age 10.
  • Embarrassing Alibi: A two-part crossover with Homicide: Life on the Street. In this episode, a young model dies after being sexually assaulted with such severity that she suffered internal injuries that resulted in toxic shock and infection that killed her. Every male who had access to the girl during the time of the assault has an alibi. In the Homicide episode that shares the same name, it turns out that this includes the girl's father, who was elsewhere having an affair that had carried on for a decade. The killer ends up being the girl's mother, who was resentful and jealous of her daughter's success.
  • Foreshadowing: Dr. Skoda tells McCoy with the possibility Brittany's father raped her, he's looking into the darkest parts of human nature - "Better bring a shovel." As we find out in the next episode, Dr. Skoda is understating the case.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Dr. and Mrs. Janaway, along with their lawyer, keep going to the press and hindering the investigation.
  • Really Gets Around: When Briscoe finds out the case will involve Baltimore, he suggests getting in touch with the detective whose ex-wife he slept with. Van Buren responds, "You're gonna have to be more specific than that."
  • Ripped from the Headlines: The JonBenét Ramsey case.
  • Seinfeldian Conversation: In Falsone and Munch's first scene, Falsone mentions there's a transgender person working in Homicide, to which Munch responds, "Are you telling me there's a Glen or Glenda working right here?"
  • Shout-Out: When Munch tells Falsone to come with him:
    Falsone: I'm waiting for Meldrick.
Munch: I'm buying at the diner.
    Falsone: Meldrick who?note
  • Stalker with a Crush: Johnnie Ramirez, though it's played with in that he never tries to harm Brittany at all (even though he has a Stalker Shrine) and saw her get raped, though he got chased away before he could see who it was.
  • Younger Than They Look: Brittany Janaway looked older, but was only 14 years old when she was murdered. Briscoe and Curtis are not happy when they find out. Brittany's friend is the same way - she's only in high school.
