Recap / Law & Order S5 E16 "Wannabe"

Go To

An accountant is shot and killed on his way to a family party. Bill Prescott's wallet is found with his body, which rules out a mugging. After ruling out conflict arising from his dealing in union negotiations, Logan and Briscoe follow the clues in the ballistics report all the way to a subway worker named Tom Harrigan. His son was expelled from a fancy private school where Prescott served as board member in charge of admissions

Tropes present in this episode.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Colin Harrigan didn't fit in with most of the rich students (and ALL of the faculty) at the school he attended.
  • All for Nothing: The rich kids who were also at the scene get away with their involvement, as Colin refuses to implicate them. They therefore receive no comeuppance for their behaviour and will continue to believe that they are just better than everyone else, and that their actions will continue to have no consequences.
  • Double Meaning: The title. It begins by suggested this is what the blue-collar Harrigans are by sending Colin to a very exclusive school (wanting to move up the social ladder); but also applies to his friends at said school who hang around him to learn his street smarts and emulate his toughness.
  • Papa Wolf: Tom Harrigan is clearly this, starting with getting his son into the right school, hiding the weapon his son used to commit the murder, doing everything in his power to keep the police away from his son, and Taking the Heat for him.
  • Red Herring: Bill Prescott was involved in negotiating with a union. However, that has nothing to do with his murder.
  • Taking the Heat: Tom Harrigan confesses to the murder, trying to spare his son Colin.
    • Colin does the same in the finale as he proves to all that he's like his Dad, and not the other kids at his school. See above for how that worked out...
