This episode contains examples of:

  • Ballistic Discount: Inverted. Lobrano, a gun dealer the detectives are attempting a sting on for evidence against the cartel, gets it in his head that Cerreta is trying to rip him off. He shoots the elder detective, ending his career on the street.
  • The Cartel: Manuel Ortega had killed a dealer who made a pass at his wife. The Cartel arranged to have them both murdered, and later arrange to kill Manuel's mother and their daughter.
  • Death of a Child: The very end of the episode implies that the couple's daughter was murdered.
  • Downer Ending: Pretty much every witness involved in the case is ruthlessly murdered by the Colombian mob. Cerreta is non-fatally shot by an arm's dealer, who was then murdered in a prison yard. The Colombian mob gets away with the entire crime, especially after tying every single loose end: including the daughter of the victims in the beginning of the episode.
  • Names to Run Away From: Javier Gaitan, the hit man, is known as the Prince of Darkness.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Ortega's mother is murdered several days after the death of her son.
  • Would Hurt a Child: At the episode's conclusion, as the DAs learn that everyone involved in the case (Ortega's mother, boss, gun dealer Lobrano) is dead, there's a brief Hope Spot when Adam mentions that the couple's daughter was picked up by her uncle. Ben informs him that she doesn't have an uncle, and Adam's eyes widen in horror at the realization that she's dead too.
