Recap / Law & Order S3 E2 "Conspiracy"

Go To

Marcus Tate, the leader of the African-American Congress (AAC) organization, is assassinated. One of the suspects is Marcus Koblin, a Jewish teacher. He is separated from his wife who works at the AAC office. The detectives find that he was the one who encouraged her to get a job there but eventually became jealous of the men working there. This led to their divorce. He is taken to trial and found not guilty with suspicions turning toward Roland Books (Joe Morton), who eventually takes over leadership of the organization.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • "Angry Black Man" Stereotype: Otis is the character that meets this stereotype the most strongly, though given that there are several Malcolm Xerox characters, this could also be used to describe others.
  • Category Traitor: Mrs. Tate accuses Robinette of this several times when the prosecutors start examining her husband's murder as a conspiracy from within the AAC.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: The Schiff One-Liner at the end of this episode references this trope:
Schiff: The beauty of conspiracy. Hell, blame it on the CIA. They haven't been fingered in years.
  • Malcolm Xerox: Tate was a moderate version, while Books represents a straight example.
  • Race Fetish: Koblin's ex-wife says that he encouraged her to join the African American Congress and become extremely involved in civil rights movements because it turned him on to see her fighting for racial equality.
