Recap / Law & Order S3 E10 "Consultation"

Go To

A pregnant Nigerian woman and her unborn child die when one of the 60 heroin-filled condoms inside her stomach ruptures. Kelani was married to a Nigerian man in America who did not know she was traveling to the US or that she was involved in drug trafficking. They look at her immigration papers and see that she was sponsored by Chief Nwaka (Wendell Pierce), a tribal leader living in New York and had an employment arrangement. Sir Idris Balewa, an official at the Nigerian embassy agrees to help the DA office, but instead helps Chief Nwaka flee back to Nigeria. The official had only agreed to cooperate to gather evidence against Nwaka to be used in a trial in Nigeria. He does guarantee that the punishment for Nwaka in such trial will be much harsher.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Jurisdiction Friction: Kelani may have died in New York, but the conspiracy that led her to be a drug mule for Nwaka is connected to Nigeria. So Sir Idris Balewa arranges for him to flee.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure:
Briscoe: Right around the corner from her is when I first saw Mose Allison.
    Logan: Who?
Briscoe: I keep forgetting when you were born.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Instead of arranging for an extradition back to Nigeria for Nwaka (where he would be punished by death), Balewa tricks both the DA office and Nwaka himself so that the latter can flee to his home country.
"Nwaka thought nothing about purchasing people's lives. He should be made to pay with his own."
