Recap / Law & Order S15E22 "Sport of Kings"

Go To

An old man hears gunshot outside his apartment; the victim is a Panamanian jockey. Fontana and Falco (Michael Imperioli) look into his murder. They learn that the jockey had been trying to get owner Edgar Varick to let him ride for him. Varick lies about the value of his Thoroughbred Razputyn. Eventually, they find out that the owner bought Razputyn (and other personal luxuries) with money stolen from pension funds. In the end, he cannot be brought to justice. He fails to show up in court and his car is found at the airport, with his body in the trunk.

Tropes present in this episode

  • Asshole Victim: Varrick embezzled the life savings of the employees of his father's company. We don't know who killed him, but likely it was one of them.
  • Deliberate Underperformance: The jockey who rides Razputyn in racesws instructed to do this, in order to make the price that Varrick said he paid for the horse sound realistic.
  • Hated by All: Given his actions, this would apply to Varrick, and will complicate any investigation into his death.
  • He Knows Too Much: Varrick murdered the jockey because the jockey figured out that Varrik was making Razputyn underperform.
  • Left Hanging: We never find out who killed Varrick.
  • Punk in the Trunk: Varrick is found dead in his car trunk.
  • Stealing from the Till: Varrick stole money from his company's pension fund.
  • White-Collar Crime: Embezzling other people's life savings qualifies.
