When Detective Jake Kearsey shows up at the wrong apartment, he is shot and killed by community activist and former Black Panther Party member Latiff Miller (Clarence Williams III). He claims it was a case of self-defense and that he feared for his life. McCoy tries to make the case that Miller was driven by rage over his nephew having been shot and paralyzed by a cop and his own hate over the police. Eventually, he is acquitted.
