Location: New York City, New York

A struggling Indian restaurant suffers from bad management and even worse food standards that appall Gordon to the core.

Note: the restaurant was renamed Purnima during production.

Tropes

  • Bittersweet Ending: Purnima stayed open until 2009, and Martin attempted to sue Ramsay for his portrayal on the show, but the case was thrown out. On the bright side, Andrew and Vikas, the most competent manager and the consultant chef, have opened their own fairly successful Indian restaurant and wrote several cookbooks together.
  • Fly in the Soup: Thankfully, there were no actual flies in any dishes served to customers, but there were hordes of insects inside the restaurant and especially the food storage.
  • Incompetence, Inc.: The staff seemingly had no idea what they were doing. They served Gordon a "vegetarian" platter that included meat, then went on to serve him a "beef" bhuna that was actually an expired lamb bhuna, then were forced to serve a frozen salmon, one of Gordon's no-nos, because they didn't think to prepare for his arrival, and served old potatoes with it. Gordon ended up shutting the place down and hiring professional cleaners because the staff hadn't kept an eye on the state of the kitchen or food storage, and as a result their ingredients were hideous; one of the managers described the meat as "putrid", there were cockroaches and flies all over storage, and Gordon's breaking point was a freshly-cut rotten tomato, the other half of which had been served as a tomato rose.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Everyone panics when they realize a rotten tomato has been sliced and served to a customer.
  • Overly Long Hug: One chef is very enthusiastic to be working with Gordon Ramsay. He needs a translator to talk with Gordon, but takes matters into his own hands once, hugs him tightly, and won't let go.
Gordon: Tell him, tell him it's only a scallop, we haven't lost our children. [Beat] Okay, okay, you can let go now. You can let go now. He can let fucking go now!
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: Martin, the general manager, shirks off his duties and generally avoids doing anything useful, and that makes him a target of one of Ramsay's outbursts. His work at the relaunch night also put the restaurant in jeopardy, but thankfully they quickly recovered once Khan stepped up to the plate. Martin even tried to sue Gordon for the damage his portrayal in this episode caused his public image, but the case was thrown out.
    Gordon: General manager? General toss-pot.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After taking one too many "insults" from Ramsay, Martin tells Mohammad that he's quitting.
  • Too Many Cooks Spoil the Soup: Gordon is baffled that the restaurant has a floor manager, an operations manager in addition to the general manager who isn't doing much, as well as two chefs.
