Recap / King Of The Hill S 9 E 2 Mrs Wakefield

Go To

An elderly stranger (voiced by Marion Ross) who used to live in the Hill's house returns so she can die in it, but all of Hank's attempts to throw her out make him look like a villain to his neighbors.

Tropes:

  • Cassandra Truth: Initially when Mrs. Wakefield keeps trying to die in the Hill's house and Hank has to keep telling his neighbors about what's really going on. They soon change their tune once they see it happen for themselves at the Christmas Party.
  • Christmas Episode: The last one in the series.
  • Convicted by Public Opinion: How Mrs. Wakefield eventually forced the Hills to let her in- after everyone on the block saw her being forced out by Hank, she promptly turns on the crocodile tears and makes it appear as if Hank was forcing an innocent person out. Since they didn't see the lead-up to that, they believe her and effectively shun Hank for most of the following day, all but forcing him to at least give her a chance in the home, and Hank acquiesces mostly to get his friends and neighbors back on his side.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: After Hank and Peggy wake up Ms. Wakefield after dinner, she sourly notes "oh, I'm still here." Seconds later, she makes her request to die in the house.
  • Food as Bribe: Ms. Wakefield tries to get Bobby to let her in by giving him a peppermint, but he merely runs away screaming.
  • Guest Star: Marion Ross as Mrs. Wakefield.
  • Heel Realization: Two-fold:
    • Hank's friends and neighbours realize that Hank was justified with his disgust with Mrs. Wakefield's demand of dying in his house when she decides to die in front of everyone during the Hills' Christmas party.
    • Mrs. Wakefield realizes how inappropriate her request is when she sees how awkward everyone is acting at the party due to her presence.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: Subverted; Mrs. Wakefield reveals her sister had also died in the home; her explanation is relatively realistic, explaining that she was struck with a fatal one walking out of what was now Bobby's room, and used her remaining strength to crawl to the phone and call the hospital, but died just before she could.
  • Hypocrite: John Redcorn spends the episode criticizing Hank for not allowing Ms. Wakefield to die in his house, telling him that an elder must be happy at death or face an eternally depressing afterlife, and wanting to boycott Hank's party in response... then he still arrives to partake in the festivities when it turns out Bill is his secret Santa, and gives cool gifts.
  • Manipulative Bastard:
    • Mrs. Wakefield is so insistent on dying in her old home, she goes so far as turning Hank into a social pariah when she acts as if Hank was forcing her out for no reason.
    • Hank is able to get everybody's goat by allowing Miss Wakefield the chance to die in the living room, during his Christmas party... which makes everybody uncomfortable, including her, and makes her decide to die another time.
  • Secret Santa: John Redcorn intended to boycott Hank's Christmas party due to how he's been treating Ms. Wakefield, but he finds out Bill is his secret Santa, and decides to go after all. Bill's is implied to be Hank, who got him an electric nose hair trimmer.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Taken to a logical conclusion; Mrs. Wakefield's intention is not to continue living at the Hill home, but to die there due to her happiest memories being in the house.
