Recap / King Of The Hill S 6 E 15 A Man Without A Country Club

Go To

Kahn loses his chance at joining an Asian-only country club, and Hank is let in because the club needs a Token White man so the PGA can host there.

Tropes:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: After Hank tells Kahn that he didn't want to become a member at the golf club because he didn't feel comfortable in there and Kahn wouldn't be able to understand, Kahn counters by mockingly telling him that he's right, he feels comfortable everywhere he goes and his original name used to be Smith before he changed it to Souphanousinphone just before he moved to Texas. Hank realizes his mistake and goes over to Kahn's house shortly afterwards to ask him to join their own backyard country club, which he accepts.
  • Character Catchphrase: Ted's tendency to call things "super" followed by an adjective is introduced in this episode.
  • Fictional Counterpart: Mr. Tran, the hot-sauce tycoon who founded Nine Rivers Country Club, is a direct reference to Huy Fong Foods founder David Tran. When Peggy tries to curry favor with Mr. Tran by saying that she recognizes his picture on his sauce bottles, he reminds her that they have a picture of a rooster on them, just as real-life Huy Fong sriracha bottles do.
  • Token White: As stated above, Ted invites Hank to his Asian-only golf club when he sees his and his friends' reproduction of the club's signature fourth hole and sees that he's the best golfer out of them as well as by far the least idiotic one of them because the PGA won't agree to host their tournament there without at least a single white member. Hank greatly enjoys his time there and he's given numerous perks so he'll sign up to be an official member, including essentially being given his 40 thousand dollar membership fee for free, but since the rest of his friends aren't allowed there and because Ted couldn't even remember what line of business he's in, he decides to turn down the offer, which also sinks Kahn's chances to get a membership at the club.
