Recap / King Of The Hill S5E15 "Luanne Virgin 2,0"

Go To

Owen Wilson guest stars as a sexually insecure man who begins dating Luanne (who becomes part of a born-again virgin church program after her latest break-up) and the two decide to marry so they can have sex without the church judging them. Meanwhile, Peggy confesses to Hank that she was not a virgin when they first had sex.

Luanne Virgin 2.0 provides examples of...

  • Accidental Misnaming: Zack's apathy for Luanne is shown when he calls Luanne "Linda" as he is dumping her, with her sadly noting that that isn't how one pronounces her name.
  • An Aesop: As Peggy puts it, rushing to marriage just to have sex is not a good idea.
  • Captain Obvious: Dooley after Luanne repeatedly (but unknowingly) flashes the whole gymnasium her underwear during her dance.
    Dooley: "I saw her panties"
    • There's also Luanne coyly saying she knows someone who's about to get some fornicating. She then clarifies that it's Peggy, not her.
  • Condescending Compassion: Peggy fails to talk Luanne out of marrying a man she just met because her advice is dripping with condescension.
Peggy: "When we meet the right guy for you, we'll know."
Luanne: "I may be a virgin, but I have been around the block a few times, and I know when someone's talking down at me."
Peggy: "I am just trying to protect you from your feelings, thoughts and instincts."
  • Continuity Nod: Luanne mentions how in addition to Zack, she had sex with Buckley, Rad from "The Wedding of Bobby Hill" and apparently one of Rad's friends.
  • Cure Your Gays: Handled far more sympathetically than most examples. Peggy reveals that her "first time" happened with a friend of hers who wanted to "cure" himself, since (as she puts it) being gay in Texas in the 60s wasn't exactly a lot of fun. When Luanne asks "Did you fix him?", Peggy responds "Oh, no, Luanne, he was not broken. Just gay. Very, very gay."
  • Double Standard: On full display at the church: when Reverend Stroup is handling the women, it consists of her Slut-Shaming them by giving them chocolates to represent the number of men they've slept with, in a highly condescending manner. And after Peggy says she slept with somebody before Hank, she silently judges her. Meanwhile, Pastor Larry, who is handling the men, simply mentions how upset he was he only had three sexual partners, and even tells Rhett it wasn't his fault when he supposedly lost his virginity at a massage parlor.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Because of his lust for her, combined with not wanting to engage in pre-marital sex, Rhett proposes to Luanne after only two dates. Thankfully nothing comes of it.
  • Jerkass Ball: Hank grabs this for most of the episode after learning Peggy lied about him being her only lover. Even though Peggy clearly regrets the lie for a variety of reasons, Hank absolutely refuses to forgive her and is even willing to force Luanne into marrying a guy simply to spite Peggy. It isn't until Peggy becomes a born again virgin and Hank is extremely turned on by seeing Peggy in a Sexy Soaked Shirt that he forgives her.
  • Jizzed in My Pants: Why Rhett is at the born-again virgin program in the first place. He tearfully admits that he received a massage from an attractive woman at an arts and crafts fair and he "sinned his pants". The pastor assures Rhett that he technically did not lose his virginity, just that pair of pants.
  • Male Gaze: The episode as a whole is loaded with it, which isn't surprising since the episode's subject is based around sex and lust. But it's particularly noticeable during Rhett and Luanne's dance. There are numerous close up shots of Luanne's bust, legs, and butt, not to mention several shots up her skirt. This is all meant to emphasize Rhett's lust for her.
  • Mating Dance: Luanne dances very suggestively with Rhett, complete with wrapping her legs around him and several accidental views up her skirt. This results in Rhett impulsively proposing to her.
  • Sexy Soaked Shirt: Ironically, this happens when Luanne becomes a born again virgin. The robes that she was wearing when she is baptized in the river become see-through and clingy, with her bra very clearly visible underneath. This happens to Peggy as well at the end when she tries to do the same thing to try to start things over with Hank who is more than willing to forgive her after seeing her like that.
  • Shower of Love: Discussed. Rhett wonders if people could have sex in the shower, as perhaps there's enough room to lie down.
  • Slut-Shaming: This happens for the women at the church, where they're all given chocolates to represent the number of men they've slept with. While some of the girls had as many as nineteen partners, Luanne is worried she'll be called a slut for sleeping with four men.
