Recap / King Of The Hill S 3 E 3 Peggys Headache

Go To

While getting treatment for migraines, Peggy finally figures out that Nancy is cheating on Dale with John Redcorn. Disgusted with the affair, Peggy plans to tell Dale.

Tropes:

  • Berserk Button: Peggy doesn't take it well when Hank tries to be supportive of her when struggling to write her musings, which leads her to seek John Redcorn to treating her headaches.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Upon discovering the affair between Nancy and Redcorn, Peggy furiously points out the amorality of not only allowing it to go on for so long but also how Hank and everyone else keep Dale ignorant of the whole thing. However, it’s also shown that the reason everyone keeps it a secret is because no one wants to risk the Gribble family being destroyed. Ultimately despite her gripes, Peggy does decide to keep quiet upon seeing a bonding moment between Dale and Joseph.
  • Characterization Marches On: Peggy is pretty nice to Dale in this episode (due to her sympathy over being cheated on) while Dale seems to get along fine with her (though a bit weirded out since he thinks she's hitting on him). Later episodes, they can't stand each others' guts (on Dale's part especially).
  • Everybody Knew Already: Peggy was the last to know of Nancy and John Redcorn's affair. Even Minh figured it out quick when she first moved into the neighborhood and teased Peggy about how slow she was to catch on.
  • Everyone Has Standards: John Redcorn may be a womanizer, but he won't sleep with a close friend's wife (or at least the wife of someone who knows what he's like).
John Redcorn: Hank, you are my friend. I promise you, I would never heal your wife the way that I heal the wives of others.
  • Good Parents: Just as Peggy is about to reveal the affair to Dale, Joseph comes up and tells him that he and Bobby want to rent Encino Man. Dale shows Joseph two five dollar bills in his wallet, giving one of them to Joseph to rent the movie while he puts the other back in his wallet so that they can be even and Joseph thanks him with a smile. But before Joseph can leave, however, Dale pulls out that same five dollar bill from his wallet and claims that he found another one so that Joseph can get some milk balls with his movie. The surprised and genuine "Thanks, Dad!" Joseph gives him is enough to touch Peggy's heart so she decides not to tell Dale about the affair.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Poor, naive Peggy really did think John Redcorn was just a masseuse treating Nancy for migraines.
  • I Didn't Tell You Because You'd Be Unhappy: Ultimately, Peggy decides not to reveal the affair to Dale, so it doesn't ruin his family.
Peggy: I guess some things are best left unsaid.
  • Ironic Echo: Hank and Peggy attend a baseball game with Dale and Nancy which John Redcorn is playing. Dale cheers Redcorn on, with him using words like "score", "swing", "doesn't strike out" and "going all the way". And of course, Peggy takes those as different meanings, causing her to leave.
  • Late to the Realization: Peggy is the very last one in the neighborhood to figure out Nancy and John Redcorn are having an affair. Even Minh, who’s still fairly new here, figured it out early on and even roasts Peggy over it.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: A minor storyline has Peggy replace Doyle Harcavy in writing musings for newspapers.
  • Oh, Crap!: Peggy freaks out when she looks at John Redcorn and Joseph and puts two-and-two together and figures out Nancy had an affair with the former, resulting in the birth of the latter.
  • Say My Name: Peggy does this with John Redcorn after learning of the affair when she sees him: "Ja-hawn Redcorn."
    • He does it back to her: "Pe-heh-ggy... Hill."
  • Thought They Knew Already: When Hank informs Peggy of Nancy's affair with John Redcorn, it's very clear from the tone of the conversation that he thinks she already knows and is just playing dumb. When she finally catches on and asks why he didn't tell him earlier he outright tells her that he thought she knew, citing that Joseph should have been a clue. In response, Peggy says Nancy told her Dale had a Jamaican grandmother, then scolds herself for falling for such an obvious lie.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Peggy calls out Hank for knowing about Nancy's affair with John Redcorn for years and never telling Dale, his friend, about it.
