Recap / King Of The Hill S 13 E 4 Lost In My Space

Go To

Strickland Propane turns to social networking to boost business, but Donna from accounting uses the company's MySpace page to post everyone's idiotic and sexual antics. Meanwhile, Dale rents a pig to hunt truffles, loses it, and has to borrow Ladybird in order to track the pig and the truffles down.

Tropes:

  • Both Sides Have a Point: Both Hank and Donna end up making good points when they butt heads in the episode with Hank stating that what Donna puts on MySpace is disrespectful and rude while Donna's blogging does bring in customers. It later comes up again at the end of the episode when Hank rightfully points out that the work tasks she hated and put off were her duties as Strickland's accountant, while Donna is right that she has other creative talents and should be given the opportunity to use them to help the business.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Donna's beef with her co-workers wouldn't have happened, let alone have gotten so bad, if she had just spoken about her feelings about her work instead of using the MySpace account to attack them. Hank sums it up best:
Hank: Donna, we could have worked everything out if we just talked out things... instead of attacking each other behind a computer.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: At the beginning, a longtime Strickland patron, Pat Richie, decides to migrate over to Thatherton's on account of getting to know him on MySpace.
  • Internet Jerk: Donna takes this up to eleven within the episode as she launches a smear campaign online against Strickland as revenge for being discharged.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Buck justifiably fires Donna when the flash mob she created (to attack Hank) attacks him instead because they thought he was Hank.
  • Literal-Minded: When Hank doubts that Donna's followers are going to come out of the computer to kick his ass, Enrique thinks that Hank is really that computer-illiterate and assures him that can't happen and if it did, that'd be something like out of Poltergeist.
  • Never My Fault: Donna launches a smear campaign against Strickland when she gets fired despite the fact it was her own fault for getting the flash mob together and unintentionally giving Strickland a beating when they mistook him for Hank.
  • Noodle Incident: There's repeated mention of a "sleepover" Donna had with Buck and several other employees aside from Hank. When Hank references this demanding to know if anyone remembers Donna's address, they admit they were so drunk they don't recall.
  • Persona Non Grata: Donna, despite her online presence, has little to no way of contact. Buck even admits to having just given her money in cash instead of a paycheque like everyone else because it was easier. It takes Hank a lot of time going through her vlogs to suss out anything about getting in contact with her to convince her into taking down all the bad stuff being said about Strickland.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Donna eventually confesses that the reason she became so obsessed with the MySpace page was because she was bored with her mundane work tasks and was thrilled with the opportunity to do something more creative.
  • Tempting Fate: When Hank laughs off Donna's eerily stated declaration that her followers on MySpace will not take him calling her an idiot on the website lightly, it is soon revealed that she wasn't wrong as countless people come to Strickland in Donna's defense.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Hank lambasting Donna on MySpace comes back to haunt him when a flash mob of Donna's followers come and beat up Buck when they think he's Hank.
