- Everyone Has Standards: Peggy and Minh are both familiar with Nancy's hidden ruthless side and advise her to utilize it to advance her career, but they both get horrified when they see how far she's going ruin her Dallas coworkers. Peggy explicitly states that Nancy's behavior is more extreme than she's shown in the past.
- Expy: Gwen St. James seems to be one to Diane Simmons from Family Guy, being a soft spoken, jaded news reporter who hates her co-anchor, while having a sexual relationship with him.
- Improvised Weapon: After a scare about guns in school, Coach Kleehammer decides to teach his students how to use the mundane contents of their schoolbags as deadly defenses, and encourages them to pelt him with textbooks.

- Landline Eavesdropping: Dale does this to Nancy when she gets a call from a Dallas news-station, and informs her that he monitors all their calls. Joseph is revealed to be doing this too, making Dale proud.Dale: That's my boy, monitoring the monitor!
- Laser-Guided Karma: Nancy gets this after everything she did to get herself to the top of the news world in Dallas only to get herself drunk and humiliate herself on the parade, getting herself fired as a result.

- Morality Pet: This episode shows that while Nancy keeps Dale's schemes from spiraling out of control, he also helps her by using up so much of her energy and attention that she can't fall prey to her Chronic Backstabbing Disorder.
- Noodle Incident: Nancy once paid a kid with impetigo to hand out with a homecoming queen competition.
- Status Quo Is God: In the end, Nancy is fired from the new station and returns to her old job in Arlen.
