Recap / Kid Cosmic S 1 E 5 Kid Cosmic And The Big Win

Go To

Kid and the Local Heroes try to protect their family, friends and favorite place to eat when a pack of demonic alien dogs invades the diner.

Tropes:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The good news? The Local Heroes managed to fend off the Death Dogs and convince their friends and their families that while they still have a few ways to go, they're capable of protecting the town. The bad news? Kid found out the robot army attack was a ruse.
  • Book Ends: At the start of the episode, Kid teases that Papa G is capable of during jobs faster with his clones, sporting a "million hands". The end of the episode has Papa G acknowledging this after building a neon sign for Jo and Flo's restaurant.
  • Bottle Episode: The majority of the episode takes place at Mo's Oasis Diner.
  • Broken Masquerade: Thanks to Kid's overconfidence in showing off his power, and the presence of the Death Dogs, the masquerade of a movie in the making is dropped.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: As Kid goes to take on the Death Dogs, he tries to put on a cool song on the diner's jukebox to accompany the fight, but accidentally plays a goofy lighthearted song instead.
  • Innocently Insensitive: During the celebration to the team's victory, the rest of the diner discusses the role of each person on the team and joke that Kid is the comic relief, with Kid looking obviously hurt by the statement even though no one sees it. His friends assure them that Kid is actually the spirit of the group, and the reason why they have the rings in the first place, but he's already stormed out by then and doesn't hear it.
  • Interrupted Catchphrase: As the Death Dogs approach the Diner, Kid was about to say his catchphrase, until Papa G quickly interrupts him so that Kid doesn't expose their powers to the patrons.
  • Kick the Dog: Although Chuck has spent the first half of the season simply being Kid's antagonist, he tops himself towards the end. It's one thing to tell Kid he's bad at being a hero. But it was especially cruel of Chuck to expose Papa G's deception to Kid, shattering any of the boy's remaining hope he could get better as a hero. Unwittingly, he also does Papa G a disservice by robbing him a chance to come clean.
  • The Load: Played for Drama. During the fighting, Kid fails to take out a single Demon Dog, which heavily disheartens him and is made worse when he overhears the diner patrons calling him the teams' comic relief. This sets him up to be emotionally crushed by Chuck at the end of the episode.
  • Mundane Utility: After Jo's mother starts to warm up to the rings and their powers, she sees them mostly as potential to improve her family restaurant.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: When Kid hugs him after his declaration of being proud of him, Papa G is feeling guilty about not being able to bring himself to come clean about the "robot army."
  • Overly Long Gag: Papa G sends legions of his clones to board up the diner from the Death Dogs. A couple of minutes are spent listening to them getting violently slaughtered before they succeed.
Papa G: You kinda get numb to it after a while.
  • Security Cling: Carl and Carla hold each other once the attack of the demon dogs begins. Carlos and Ramona hug each other while keeping Rosa in the middle of their embrace so she is protected.
  • Sound-Only Death: Papa G's clones are violently torn apart by the demon dogs. We can only hear the sounds of their gruesome deaths.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Papa G discovers that the Death Dogs are energy constructs formed from their electronic collars. They can cancel out their forms by holding something as small as a paper clip into a pinhole reset button in said collars for three seconds, though it's still a challenge to even get close to them without getting bitten. As Rosa demonstrated, however, the collars simply being destroyed has the same effect.
  • Wham Shot: In-Universe. Chuck plays the tape showing Kid's victory over the robots outside his trailer. Then fast-forwards to the end, revealing to Kid that it's Papa G in disguise.
