Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S2E2 "AKA A Freak Accident"

Go To

Jessica tries contacting Dr. Kozlov. Meanwhile, Trish is continuing her research on her sister's past.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • We're led to believe Will Simpson is the one who killed Kozlov and Whizzer, but it turns out to be another superpowered individual.
    • At a bar, a man harasses Jessica by making a comment on her ass. Instead of kicking his ass, she has sex with him in the bar's bathroom. It is not played for Fanservice but to show the depths of Jessica's depression.
  • Back for the Dead: Simpson reappears, only to be killed by the murderer.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: After hearing what Max Tatum did to Trish, Malcolm (one of the nicest and most gentle characters of the series) straight up breaks the man's nose.
  • Blackmail: Trish resorts to it, trying to force Max Tatum to give her access to records at Metro-General Hospital, threatening to expose the sexual harassment she suffered from him as a teen actress.
  • Bus Crash: Dr. Kozlov was killed offscreen by the same person that killed Whizzer.
  • Engineered Public Confession: Trish has Malcolm secretly record her letting loose her rage at a producer who molested her as a teen, so she can blackmail him into getting access to crucial hospital records.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Many people are seen attending Kozlov's funeral.
  • Exact Words: Meeting Kozlov's friend, Jessica says she "won't hit a guy in a wheelchair." She ends up knocking him out of it and pointing out he's not in the chair anymore to threaten him.
  • Fan Disservice: Hogarth's orgy is clearly not meant to be found sexy.
  • Fantastic Racism: Oscar acts quite hostile to Jessica after finding out about her powers at the end of last episode, even giving the police a false testimony. Though later episodes will reveal that there's a lot more to it.
  • Handicapped Badass: Kozlov's friend Isaiah may be in a wheelchair, but he can still give Jessica a fight. If only a brief one.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Simpson gives his life to keep Trish safe. Double as Senseless Sacrifice because the killer wasn't after Trish.
  • Hookers and Blow: Hogarth hires three prostitutes and gets drunk and high on cocaine with them.
  • I Am a Monster: Simpson has come to terms with what he has done and wants to make up for it.
  • Insult Backfire: Jessica to Oscar when confronting him about lying to the police.
Oscar: Just stay the hell away from me and my son!
Jessica: [rolls her eyes] You stay away from me!
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Jeri feels her illness is karma for the shady things she's done (especially her involvement with Kilgrave and her ex-wife).
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Simpson barely reacts to Trish shooting him in the leg due to his performance enhancers.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Apparently, Kozlov was murdered in a similar way to the Whizzer.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Simpson's reddened blue eyes are reminiscent of his USA flag facial tattoo.
    • Whizzer owned a pet mongoose named Emil. In the comics, the original Whizzer received his powers from a mongoose blood transfusion. Emil was also the name of the Whizzer's father.
  • Neck Snap: The monster kills Will by completely twisting his neck around.
  • Not Me This Time: Turns out, no, Simpson did not kill Kozlov and Whizzer. Something far worse did.
  • Papa Bear: Oscar is worried that Jessica's presence will endanger his custody over his son.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Simpson's new drug doesn't make him as psychotic as the previous batch, so he tries to make amends by protecting Trish. Jessica and Trish allow him to help and moments later, he's killed.
  • Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome: Simpson's death comes extremely unexpectedly.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Whizzer believed so.
  • Worf Effect: Simpson is killed off-screen effortlessly just to show how nasty the Big Bad is.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: What Simpson tries to do with whatever is following Trish. Unfortunately, he fails.
