Recap / Jessica Jones S1E9 "AKA Sin Bin"

Go To

Just when Jessica finally has Kilgrave where she wants him, she runs into a problem. How can she legally prove Kilgrave has the power to make others do what he wants?

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Early on, Kilgrave tries to sweet-talk Hogarth into letting him out of the CDC vault where Jessica has him locked up. Since he can't exert his powers over a microphone, he can't compel Hogarth to let him loose. He instead tries to persuade her to let him out, claiming that someone of his abilities can be very useful to her by making problems "disappear". During his monologue, the camera pans over to the door leading into the vault and Hogarth begins to walk toward it—only to stop and turn on the video camera that Jessica had set up and say, "Repeat that for the camera."
  • Bittersweet Ending: Kilgrave escapes the CDC facility after killing his mother, and tries to kill Trish and his father. On the other hand, Jessica now knows for sure that she is The Immune.
  • Creator's Culture Carryover: Kilgrave's childhood hero played for a university Rugby Team. College sports teams get little attention in Britain, unlike America. It's possibly justified as the parents were both professors, so Kilgrave grew up on the campus, immersed in school spirit.
  • Deal with the Devil: Hogarth is about to accept Kilgrave's offer in exchange for releasing him, but is interrupted when Jessica returns.
  • Dramatic Gun Cock: Clemons walks in with one. Then Trish walks in with her own. To make it worse, her revolver is clearly not cocked. Clemons's is a little harder to see.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Jessica digs up photos of the professors overseeing the Kevin project, and can't make any headway until she accidentally steps on one photo—leaving it scuffed in the same manner as the scars on a burn victim amongst the Kilgrave support group.
  • First-Name Basis: Having referred to Kilgrave by his assumed name for most of the series, Jessica really enjoys calling him by his given name of Kevin.
  • Golden Mean Fallacy: Kilgrave tries to get Hogarth on his side by arguing that between his version and Jess's version then she, as a lawyer, must know that the truth lies "somewhere in the middle".
  • It Works Better with Bullets: Kilgrave commands Trish to put a bullet in her head. Thank god that gun is empty, or someone would have a bad day.
  • Mama Bear: Kilgrave's mother keeps insisting that "he's our responsibility!" Subverted, because she meant that he's their fault, and she tries to kill him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Had Trish not tried to kill Kilgrave, the latter would not have escaped.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Jessica gives Kilgrave one bad enough that Trish shocks her, worried that she might accidentally kill him. Jessica mentions that even she almost feels sorry for him after watching the footage.
  • Noodle Incident: "We altered protocol after what happened in Damascus."
  • Mythology Gag: When referring to his pills, Simpson tells his doctor, "Give me a red," which is a line of dialogue taken straight from his first appearance in the Daredevil comics.
  • Offing the Offspring: Kilgrave's mother attempts this by trying to stab him in the neck with a pair of scissors, in the hopes of correcting the mistake of giving him his powers. She is unsuccessful and Kilgrave makes her stab herself with it.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • When Jessica realizes the emergency switch is broken.
    • Hogarth's face when she realizes that, having cut the wire, Kilgrave's parents are now in mortal danger.
    • All over Kilgrave's face when he remembers he cannot control Jessica.
  • Parental Abandonment: Kilgrave's parents ran away from him because he used his powers to enslave them and burn his mother's face with her own iron.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Averted. Jessica keeps trying to call our Kilgrave's parents for creating him, but they keep explaining the reality behind Kilgrave's self-serving lies. They weren't experimenting on him, they were desperately trying to save his life. They didn't run away as soon is it got tough, they put up with his torments for years. They didn't abandon responsibility, they hid, but as soon as Kilgrave appeared in the news they came to try and help his victims.
  • The Reveal: Jessica is immune to Kilgrave.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Once the Thompsons are unsuccessful in Offing the Offspring, Kilgrave orders them to suicide. Mom does so, Dad is knocked out by Jessica to stop it.
  • Shout-Out: Jessica trying to interrogate the captive Kilgrave, only for him to goad her into beating him within an inch of his life in order to prove he still has power over her, reeks strongly of Batman's interrogation of The Joker.
  • Title Drop: In the video of the experiments performed on Kilgrave, his parents goad him by telling him, "You don't see Eric crying when he goes in the sin bin."
  • Wham Line:
    • For comic readers, anyway: confirming Will Simpson as Nuke, a Daredevil villain.
      Simpson: Give me a red.
    • One that only works in audio form—one member of the Kilgrave support group has never spoken up, until Jessica starts goading her and she just goes, "sorry, I've got to go." In an English accent. Just like the professors in charge of experimenting on Kilgrave as a child. Which was because they were his own parents... and the woman is his mother.
  • Wham Shot: Kilgrave orders Jessica to let go of him and it doesn't work.
