Go To

Story by John Semper, Jr. and Phil Baron
Directed by Hugh Martin
Song: "A Special Something"

When Revvin' Evan hits a bump on the side of the road and needs help, the planes at E.Z. Airlines race to his rescue. In the next day's Tarrytown newspaper, an article is written about the planes' act of courage—-all except for Jay Jay. This not only hurts Jay Jay's feelings, but also makes him feel that he lacks "something special". Jay Jay searches and searches for a special skill or ability that defines his "specialty." And, in the end, he learns that he does possess something special, after all. Jay Jay has a caring nature towards others. And, what could be more special than that?

"Something Special" provides examples of:

  • An Aesop: Everyone has something that makes them special.
  • Foreshadowing: When Revvin' Evan gets stuck on the road, Jay Jay was the first to alert that he's in trouble. This hints at his "special something": he always cares about others and is willing to help out.
  • Incredibly Long Note: Hit by Jay Jay several times throughout his "I Want" Song.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Jay Jay’s goal throughout the episode.
  • Incredibly Long Note: Jay Jay does this a lot in "A Special Something", the last note ending like this:
I need a special something, it's the one thing that I neeeeeeeeeed!
  • "I Want" Song: Played straight with in Jay Jay's song "A Special Something".
  • The Oner: The whole scene where Brenda reads the newspaper and Jay Jay thinks he doesn’t have something special is done in one continuous take.
