Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 2 E 35 Chi Of The Vampire

Go To

When Jackie, Uncle, Jade, and Tohru go to collect estate treasures that Uncle is buying for his shop, the executor tries to sell them the antiques quickly, but Uncle insists on appraising them before final purchase. Turns out, there's a dark secret among the antiques: a Chinese vampire. Upon being awakened, the vampire starts stealing the Chan Clan's chi. Now, in order to prevent from becoming the vampire's minions, the Chans must share their chi, with Tohru adopting Jade's personality while Jade receives Uncle's, but unless they want this change to be permanent, Jackie and the others must reclaim the stolen chi from the vampire before sunrise. And to complicate matters, Uncle doesn't receive a chi transfusion in time...

Tropes appearing in this episode:

  • Achilles' Heel: The vampire can be defeated by magic which the group does.
  • Argument of Contradictions: Uncle and the executor of the estate have a back-and-forth argument about the heirlooms.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Uncle makes one when the Chans first enter the castle.
Uncle: [quietly and seriously] This mansion is a… [cheerily picks up a vase to inspect] gold mine!
  • Big Damn Heroes: Tohru saves Jackie when the vampire comes for him during their first confrontation.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Uncle becomes the Jiangshi's vampiric slave.
  • Captain Obvious: When Uncle turns into the Jiangshi’s minion.
Jade: Aiyah! He is a servant to the vampire!
    Tohru: Duh.
  • Cannot Cross Running Water: To escape the Jiangshi, the Chans' attempted to cross the bridge over the river so it couldn't get to them. Unfortunately, the bridge collapsed before they could cross it.
  • Chinese Vampire: The Jiangshi has the traditional weaknesses but can grow stronger and overcome them by absorbing the chi of its victims. Most of that episode's comedy comes from Jackie's disbelief at all the seemingly arbitrary rules for fighting it.
Jade: [With Uncle's chi] We must collect a toadstool from a graveyard, place it inside the vampire's left sock, and throw the sock into a river [to depower it].
    Jackie: ....you're making this up.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Knowing what was about to happen to the vampire after he was reduced back to his weakened state, Jackie shielded Jade's eyes just before the vampire was vaporized by the morning sun.
  • Crying Wolf: Jade scares Jackie numerous times in the castle, so he naturally doesn't believe her when she warns him about a vampire that escaped.
  • Cue the Sun: Played both straight and as a bad thing. It was mentioned if the chi the vampire had taken wasn't restored before the sun came up, it would be his forever. Then, once the Chans succeeded in reclaiming the chi, the sun rising ended up being the vampire's end.
  • Dramatic Drop: Upon seeing Tohru collapsed on the floor and the open coffin nearby, Uncle drops a vase he had been holding.
  • Dramatic Thunder: Rolls at pivotal moments.
  • Eye of Newt: The spell that can take back the stolen chi from the Jiangshi requires a toadstool from a graveyard to be put into the Jiangshi's left sock, and after the spell is cast, the sock with the toadstool in it must be thrown into a river before sunrise. This is based on historic beliefs about dealing with vampires, although usually the sock was filled with rocks or soil from the vampire's grave.
  • Fighting Your Friend: With Uncle under the Jiangshi's thrall, Jackie and the others are reluctantly forced to deal with him.
Jackie: Uncle, we will not fight you!
    (Vampire!Uncle sends the Chans flying)
Tohru: Tch! Like he's giving us a choice!
  • Genre Savvy: Jade doesn't want to sleep alone because the beautiful girl is always the first one to die in movies.
  • Haunted Castle: The setting for this whole episode, which provides the trope's current page image. Jackie, Jade, Uncle, and Tohru visit an abandoned mountain castle located somewhere in China, hoping to buy and sell the antiques it contains. But they later find out the hard way that this wasn't really such a good deal, as they were not warned that a sleeping Jiangshi resided here. That said, once the vampire was dealt with, Uncle was able to use the experience to lower the price.
  • Ill-Timed Sneeze: Double subverted. When hiding from the Jiangshi, Jade stops Jackie from sneezing only to sneeze herself.
  • It Was Here, I Swear!: Jade wants to show Jackie the vampire in the coffin but by the time they get back to the room, the coffin is empty leaving Jackie in doubt over Jade's story.
  • Life Drinker: The vampire drains chi through the victim's eyes, which doesn't kill them but slowly converts them into another vampire enthralled to their sire.
  • Low Clearance: A low-hanging branch pushes the vampire from the carriage.
  • Near-Villain Victory: During the finale, as the sun was rising, the vampire noted that in moments, the chi he stole would belong to him forever. Cue Jackie getting hold of his left sock.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Jackie brushes Jade off when she tries to point him to the vampire in the next room.
  • Offscreen Karma: It's mentioned at the end of the episode that for not telling the Chans about the Jiangshi, resulting in them having to fight it (not to mention leading to Uncle temporarily becoming its minion), Uncle managed to get the estate executor to sell him the antiques at half price.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Jiangshi reacts this way when the Chans take his left sock, realizing they're about to cast the spell needed to reclaim the stolen chi, and again when Tohru throws the sock with the toadstool into the river.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: Jackie does it twice. In the opening scene when he dry-humps Tohru on the carriage after Jade scares him from behind. And then at the end, he does it when the vampire grabs him.
  • Personality Swap: After Tohru and Jade are attacked by the Jiangshi, Uncle transfers Jade's chi into Tohru and his chi into Jade. Tohru is still a hulking powerhouse but now is a lot more talkative and using teenage slang after being given Jade's chi. Although Jade gets Uncle's inquisitive nature and focus, she doesn't acquire his knowledge, so she still has to research how to solve the problem on her own. Jade lampshades this.
Jade: [With Uncle's chi] Jade has Uncle's chi, not his brains.
  • Reduced to Dust: What happened to the Jiangshi when the sun rose, just after it returned to its original weak form.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel:
    • The Jiangshi was initially blind and only able to find victims by smelling their breath, but after feeding on Tohru, Jade, and Uncle's chi, it grew strong enough that it gained sight, as Jackie found out when he tries to hide from it by holding his breath like before.
    • The Jiangshi also grew strong enough to endure the light of day, a regular vampire weakness.
  • The Renfield: Uncle turns into the vampire's servant for a while.
  • Running Gag:
    • Jade (and later Tohru) startling somebody (usually Jackie) and causing them to beat on their chest to restart their heart. Jade weaponizes this against the Jiangshi to save Jackie from it.
    • Jackie is constantly confused by the ridiculous rules of the Jiangshi, asking where Uncle is getting them all from and accusing him (and later Jade when she has Uncle's chi) of making them up.
  • Security Cling: Jackie clings to Tohru after Jade scares him on the way to the castle.
  • So Much for Stealth: The group almost evades the vampire by holding their breath but they run out of it before too long and alert the creature to their presence.
  • Suddenly Voiced: After feeding on enough chi, the voiceless Jiangshi gains the ability to speak, much to Jackie's shock.
Jiangshi: (To Jackie) I see you.
Jackie: You can see? You can talk?!
  • Traintop Battle: Jackie fighting the vampire from the roof of the carriage.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The Chan family would never have dealt with the Jiangshi if Jade had never freed him from his coffin. Then again, if she hadn't opened the coffin, the Chans would've ended up taking the Jiangshi with them...
  • Vampire Episode: The Chan Clan has to deal with a Chinese Vampire that has drained the chi of Tohru, Jade, and Uncle and find a way to get the stolen chi back before sunrise lest it be lost to them forever.
  • Vampires Sleep in Coffins: Jade accidentally wakes the Jiangshi from one.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: Uncle's reaction after waking up from the Jiangshi's curse.
Uncle: Who stuck special parchment to Uncle's head?!
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: At one point, Tohru breaks off a piece of banister to use against the Jiangshi. Uncle informs him that Jiangshi is a Chinese vampire, so a Wooden Stake would be useless.
  • You Are Too Late: Just before Jackie, Jade, and Tohru can find a chi transfusion spell, Uncle's transformation into the Jiangshi's slave is complete. As Tohru put it:
Tohru: I think we just ran out of time.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Said word for word by Jackie when Jade starts acting like Uncle.
  • Your Other Left: During the climactic fight with the Jiangshi, Tohru manages to swipe his sock. Unfortunately, he gets the wrong one.
Jade: (Stomping her foot) The other left sock, Tohru!
