"How many lives do you possess!?."

Shendu is released from his statue form thanks to getting all the talismans, and leaves without giving Valmont a promised treasure. Tohru abandons Valmont after being forced to fight Shendu, and tells the heroes about the demon: Shendu plans to return to his old fortress in Hong Kong, and open a portal to free his army of dragons and burn Asia to ashes. Jackie is the only one who can stop him now.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Air-Vent Passageway: How both Jade and the Dark Hand escape Section 13.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: We get this from Jackie when he sees that he pulled the Monkey Talisman from Shendu:
Jackie: Monkey?! I was hoping for-(Sees Shendu bearing down on him and points the talisman at him) Rabbit! (Zaps Shendu and turns him into a rabbit)
  • Better the Devil You Know: As horrible as Shendu is, Uncle angrily states that the plan was only to stop him, not kill him, because with his death there is a void for a new evil to fill, an evil that could be stronger than Shendu.
  • Big "NO!": Shendu, as he's reverted to a statue.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Jade uses Uncle's "one more thing" line when she shows up at the end to live with Jackie for another year.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Uncle provides a spell that allows the talismans to be removed from Shendu even though he is not a statue. Despite Jackie managing to steal the Ox, Shendu overpowers him.
  • Call-Back: Tohru's Heel–Face Turn stems from Jackie explaining that every Thursday at Section 13 "is Donut Day".
  • Consolation Prize: After all of Shendu's treasure is reduced to dust, Finn asks Valmont if he'd settle for this, in the form of the abandoned talismans in the sand.
  • David Versus Goliath: As seen in the picture, Jackie versus Shendu.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Valmont and the Enforcers get back at Shendu for betraying them by stealing all the treasure in his castle.
  • Exact Words: Shendu promised Valmont that he would reward the Dark Hand the treasure of Qin Shi Huang if they retrieve all of the talismans. He breaks this promise because, technically, Jackie's dark self from last episode gathered all but one of them, not Valmont's gang.
  • Flat Joy: See below.
  • Genre Savvy: When Shendu introduces himself to Jackie he doesn't give his actual name. This results in Jackie and Uncle not knowing what his plans are since there were numerous Demon Sorcerers and no means to find out which one, he is. Only Tohru's Heel–Face Turn gets them the info they need.
  • Good Is Not Soft: When the neutralized Shendu swears to have his revenge even if it takes nine additional centuries, Jade coldly uses the Dragon Talisman to finish him off once and for all. No-one is upset about this, except for Uncle, and only because with Shendu gone, a new stronger evil will fill his place in the Balance Between Good and Evil.
  • Hates Being Touched: Tohru's response to Uncle ordering Jackie to give him a hug.
Uncle: Come, Jackie! Give Tohru a hug!
    Tohru: Don't.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Tohru quits the Dark Hand and joins the heroes in this episode.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Shendu denying the Dark Hand the treasure he promised them backfired on him the long run. After escaping prison, they follow Shendu to Hong Kong and attempt to steal his treasure, unknowingly bringing Jade with them, and she helps Jackie defeat the dragon.
  • Hope Spot: With the Dragon Talisman, Jackie blasts a hole clean through Shendu's chest, much to everyone's relief. Shendu then reminds Jackie of the healing properties of the Horse Talisman.
  • Insufferable Genius: Uncle really knows how to have this kind of moment in this episode.
Uncle: See? What have we learned?
Section 13 agents: (in Flat Joy) Magic Must Defeat Magic.
  • It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Jade blasting Shendu into nothing seemed like the right thing to do, until Uncle pointed out the Evil Power Vacuum his destruction leaves.
  • I Have Many Names: Shendu formally introduces himself to Jackie in this manner now that he is freed.
Shendu: I am the keeper of the Talismans. I am the Apocalypse of which Legend speaks. And I am, for once and for all, your executioner!
  • The Juggernaut: Shendu cannot be defeated while he has all the talismans, so Uncle uses a spell that allows Jackie to steal the talismans from the demon's body. Jackie initially appears to win by blasting Shendu with the dragon talisman, but as long as Shendu has the dog and horse talismans, he is immortal and has a Healing Factor. Ergo, physical harm means nothing to him, and he can only be defeated by stealing the rat or tiger talismans to turn him back into a statue.
  • Killer Rabbit: Jackie uses the monkey talisman to turn Shendu into a rabbit, one that can still levitate, turn invisible, and shoot beams out of his eyes.
  • Little "No": Jade when Shendu gets the better of the Ox-empowered Jackie.
  • Magic Must Defeat Magic: The Trope Namer thanks to Uncle, explaining that a fully powered Shendu cannot be brought down by conventional weaponry.
  • Misplaced Retribution: After Shendu is destroyed, Uncle gives a Dope Slap and You Fool! rant to Jackie. Jackie quickly and rightly points out that it was Jade's doing.
  • Near-Villain Victory: In the end, Shendu would have won if it wasn't for Jade's timely intervention since he is eventually able to get Chan on the ropes and nearly feeds him to his dragon minions.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jade unintentionally caused the start of the Demon Sorcerer's return when she killed Shendu.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain:
    • Valmont forcing Torhu to fight Shendu when the latter refuses to give Valmont the treasure of Qin Shi Huang like he promised, which almost got Torhu killed, was just what was needed to cause Torhu's Heel–Face Turn, quit the Dark Hand and decide to help the Chans, by helping learn who Shendu is, as well discover his plan to destroy Asia.
    • Jackie would have never stopped Shendu's plan to destroy Asia without Jade's help, but Jade wouldn't have been there to help if wasn't for the Dark Hand traveling to Hong Kong to steal Shendu's treasure and unknowingly brought Jade along with them.
  • No Ontological Inertia: Shendu's destruction results in his palace disintegrating, as well as all his treasure, much to the Dark Hand's dismay.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Jackie acknowledges how Tohru being part of the team is going to take some getting used to.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Enforcers in response to Shendu being electrocuted, being stunned that he's not even singed. Captain Black also has this reaction when he sees Shendu after not believing in magic for the whole season.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: Tohru is punted out of a skyscraper and the rest of the Dark Hand thinks he's dead. He turns up an hour later at the antique shop, with a sling and covered in bandages.
  • Power Cable Attack: Jackie tries on Shendu in Valmont's office. It only makes the dragon pissed off.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: After the defeated Shendu promises to try again no matter how long it takes.
Jade: No rat means you're just a statue, [holds up the Dragon Talisman] and no dog means you're not immortal.
  • Running Gag: Every time Jackie seems to be in trouble fighting Shendu, Captain Black orders his men to ready their weapons, only to be interrupted by Uncle, who tells them "No, Magic Must Defeat Magic!". It lasts until the third time, when Uncle gives Captain Black a Vulcan nerve pinch and knocks him out, saying "Who else wants a piece of Uncle?". Black is out cold for the rest of the fight, including the last time Jackie finds himself in dire straits against Shendu.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When an enraged Shendu turns his attention to Jackie, Valmont tells the Enforcers that it's time to leave.
  • Sequel Hook: Since Shendu was killed, there's now an Evil Power Vacuum that another, "stronger" evil can fill (and we discover Shendu has an extended family who tries to fill it). Also, Valmont and the Enforcers get their hands on the talismans. Also, the not quite disintegrated ruins are revisited in season 4.
  • Serious Business: How Uncle reacted when Shendu is destroyed as it causes the balance between good and evil to loosen.
  • Shooting Superman: Double Subverted. Captain Black and his men attempt to attack Shendu with rocket launchers, but Uncle stops them, pointing out that "Magic Must Defeat Magic." When Jackie steals the dragon talisman from Shendu, he shoots a hole in him. Everyone assumes Shendu is beaten, forgetting that he has the Horse Talisman, so the injury instantly regenerates.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Shendu wants to get revenge on the descendants of those who sealed him...by flattening all of Asia.
  • Skeptic No Longer: Captain Black goes from not believing the talismans are actually magical to absolutely accepting it after he catches a glimpse of Shendu taking off from Valmont's office.
  • The Starscream: Valmont, once again.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Captain Black can't believe that Uncle wants to know if Shendu has any specific markings to identify him.
Captain Black: Red eyes, great big claws and razor-sharp teeth isn't SPECIFIC ENOUGH FOR YOU?!
  • Super-Strength: As Jackie found out the hard way, the ox talisman enhances rather than grants Shendu's physical strength. Even without it, Shendu is able to match an ox empowered Jackie with his natural dragon/demon strength.
Jackie: [struggling] The playing field… is almost even… Shendu!
Shendu: You may have the Ox, but relative to me, all that makes you is a very strong mouse!
  • A Taste Of His Own Medicine: After briefly getting turned into a rabbit, Shendu tries to return the favor by turning Jackie into a monkey. He narrowly misses.
  • Uncomfortable Elevator Moment:
Ratso: Too bad about the lost treasure of... y'know, whatcha call it.
Finn: Uh, will this affect our bonuses?
    Ratso: You get a bonus?
    Valmont: Shut it!
  • Use Their Own Weapon Against Them: After Shendu's turned back into a statue, Jade destroys him by blasting him with his own Dragon Talisman.
  • What the Hell Are You?:
    Jackie: Who... What are you?!
  • Why Won't You Die?: Shendu asks Chan "How many lives do you possess?" when he sees him at the palace.
  • The Worf Effect: Shendu shows off his restored self by easily beating up Tohru.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Shendu after Jackie (last seen getting blasted out the window) tries electrocuting him in Valmont's office.
  • You Have Failed Me: Shendu pulls this one on Valmont by claiming it's not him who gave him the talismans, Dark Jackie did.
