Recap / Jack Ryan S 02 E 01 Cargo

Go To

Monica Herrera: In Venezuela, trust takes years to build. Or moments to purchase.

Greer's position in Russia is endangered by a health concern. He and Jack reunite in Venezuela when Greer's investigation of a rogue satellite launch in the South China Sea merges with Jack's investigation of a cargo ship he believes is being used in weapon smuggling.

Tropes:

  • Bad Boss: Greer's superior reacts to news of his heart condition by complaining about the difficulties it causes him. Compare this to Greer himself ordering Jack to get his back checked last season.
  • Call-Back:
  • Calling the Cops on the FBI: While on his way to meet an informant in Moscow, Greer suspects that the man and woman walking behind him might be Russian counter-intelligence agents following him. He approaches a pair of Russian uniformed policemen and reports that he saw the man hit the woman. While the cops talk to the pair, Greer slips away.
  • Confess to a Lesser Crime: Greer is meeting with an informant in a Moscow hotel and the guy suggests that if the authorities burst in, they claim that they are gay lovers. This would get them into trouble in Russia but not as much as espionage and treason would. Greer does not think much of the suggestion since if the FSB is onto them, a lie like that is not going to save them.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Senator Moreno is Jack's former CO in the Marines, was the first person he saw on waking up from surgery, visited him throughout his recovery and is now still close enough to throw him a surprise birthday party at his house. Which makes it all the more traumatic for Jack when their convoy is attacked and Moreno is shot dead in front of him.
  • Honey Trap: Jack is seduced by Noomi Rapace's character, who introduces herself as Lena. Given that she searches and bugs his hotel room once he's asleep, that's probably a lie.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Max Schenkel bribes the police captain to set up Jack and Moreno's convoy for the ambush. The captain comes home to find his wife and children murdered, and the assassin tries to kill him too. The captain survives, with the help of his dog who bites the assassin and is killed while the captain escapes.
  • Lecture as Exposition: One of Jack's first scenes in season 2 is lecturing a class about how Venezuela is the biggest threat to peace in the world. Sure enough, the season is all about Venezuela.
  • Manchild: President Reyes is described in these terms by Ubarri, who asserts that he's "blind to anything he doesn't want to see" and annoying the Americans.
  • Oh, Crap!: Greer's face when he finds out the other agent who requested the same information he did is Jack.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Jack is revealed to be best friends with a United States senator who was also his commanding officer in the military. This is the first we hear of him.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Greer is accosted by the agents he ditched earlier. He turns, planning to make a fight of it, but then collapses. The agents freak out, because a dead American agent would cause a diplomatic incident, and ditch him outside a hospital. Turns out he has a heart condition.
  • Working the Same Case: Greer is in Moscow, tracking a rogue satellite launch in the South China Sea by tracing a cargo ship to Venezuela. Jack and Moreno's investigation also involves that same cargo ship, believing that it's being used for weapons smuggling. Greer unites with the two in Caracas.
