Recap / J-WITCH S2 E3, "Relics of Demons Past"

Go To

When an act of cosmic balance awakens the chi of the Demon Sorcerers, Drago leads the Knights back to Earth in search of an artifact containing the Wind Demon's chi.

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Hak Foo is the one to get Drago's dragon speed, Frost gets dragon strength, and Raythor gets dragon flame, with the power even restoring his lost muscles.
    • Drago has his mother's Quintessence powers (if to a lesser degree than her) in addition to his natural fire demon abilities.
  • Balance Between Good and Evil: The awakening of the Demon Chi in this story is at least in part a reaction and counterbalance to the lowering of the Veil and the increase in Kandrakar and the Guardians' powers as a result.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Last chapter, Alchemy offhandedly mentioned about wanting to have her own transformation like her friends, only to get possessed by the Wind Demon's chi here.
  • Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: Will's briefly-used Quintessence is pink as opposed to Nerissa's white, while Drago's is dark red.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Hak Foo, Frost, and Raythor, already extremely strong fighters, are granted portions of Drago's chi. This grants them Super-Speed, Super-Strength, and fire powers.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Instead of the Ice Crew, Drago gives portions of his chi and the resulting power-ups to Frost, Raythor, and Hak Foo.
    • The Wind Demon Chi ends up in Alchemy instead of Jade, and is then absorbed by the Tracker instead of Drago. He proceeds to actually use it in battle before it's stripped from him, whereas canonically Drago had it taken from him by Uncle before he could do much with it.
  • Hannibal Lecture: Elyon goes to interrogate the captive Shendu about Drago, and it isn't long before he's getting in her head about how she should be executing Phobos in order to secure her reign. She ends up leaving the room quite disturbed.
  • Lamarck Was Right: In addition to his powers inherited from Shendu, Drago has some power over Quintessence from his mother's side of things, if not nearly to the same extent as her or even Will.
  • Mythology Gag: Will's powers manifest as the pink energy from the comics instead of lightning like in the show to contrast Nerissa, on the logic that no person is the same, so every individual with Quintessence has it take a different form, though in the functional aspects it's still the same as in the canon show.
  • Weirdness Magnet: When the group is discussing how they don't know what new evil is coming or how to deal with it, Jade suggests just waiting, given that that kind of stuff tends to find them most of the time. Alchemy admits that she has a point.
