Recap / J-WITCH S1 E11, "Pleasure Cruise"

Go To

After Jackie thwarts a theft attempt on a valuable dragon statue, it's moved to a cruise ship as a means of hiding it, and he's given tickets for the whole group to enjoy a relaxing cruise. Unfortunately, Valmont and his new underlings aren't willing to give up.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Strikemaster Ice flirts with Will during their fight, much to her disgust.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In JCA canon, the Ice Crew didn't appear until an episode late in Season 4. Here, they appear while the JCA side of the story is still in the equivalent of Season 3.
  • And This Is for...: Mama Tohru, when she confronts Valmont.
Mama Tohru: (stomps on Valmont's foot) That is for lying to me! (punches him in the gut) That is treating my boy the way you did! (punches him in the face) And this is for making him fight a demon! (uppercuts his jaw)
  • Broken Pedestal: Valmont becomes one to Mama Tohru after she learns the truth about him.
  • Cruise Episode: The bulk of the chapter takes place on a cruise ship.
  • Flipping the Table: Valmont, frustrated because of the Terrible Interviewees Montage he's going through and Hak Foo's failure to steal the Golden Dragon, throws his table to the side.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • Valmont, Hak Foo, and the Ice Crew are the ones to try and steal the Golden Dragon from the cruise ship instead of the random Villain of the Week from canon. This leads to Tohru's mother learning the truth about her son's former employer, which she never did in canon.
    • In the canon episode, the Golden Dragon is returned from San Francisco to Hong Kong straight across the Pacific Ocean, but since the museum decides that a detour is better, the statue is transported to Heartherfield (where Jackie and his family have moved to), sailed across the Atlantic to London, and finally returned to Hong Kong by air. This allows the W.I.T.C.H. characters to join the Chan Clan on the cruise ship transporting the statue.
  • Games of the Elderly: Like in the canon episode, Uncle and Tohru's mother compete in various games during the cruise, with Yan Lin joining them as the friendly counterbalance with whom both of the two Sitcom Arch Nemesises get along with. They start with mahjong since they all are masters of it.note  While Tohru's mother repeatedly beats Uncle as per canon, she admits Yan Lin isn't half-bad in gin rummy, with Yan Lin boasting that no-one can beat her at any card game.
  • Groin Attack: Will traps Strikemaster Ice in a grip, allowing Jade to deliver a flying kick in his groin.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: Valmont says this before the Ice Crew shows up to beat up the failed henchman candidates:
Valmont: I cannot believe that I'm about to say this but... I miss Finn, Ratso, and Chow.
  • Invulnerable Knuckles: Hak Foo and DJ Fist try to break the door of the vault containing the Golden Dragon with their fists, only to end up holding their sore hands.
  • Mama Bear: Tohru's mother goes ballistic on Valmont when she discovers the truth about him and what he made her son do.
  • Mythology Gag: The Terrible Interviewees Montage and the Ice Crew beating up the unsatisfying henchmen applicants are straight out from "Black and White and Chi All Over" — except that Drago is replaced by Valmont, who was canonically one of the rejected candidates.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: In the trio of competing seniors, there's the jovial Yan Lin who gets along with everyone (nice), Uncle who's his usual Grumpy Old Man self (mean), and Tohru's mother who's aggressive with Uncle, but gets along with everyone else (in-between).
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When MC Cobra suggests blowing open the Golden Dragon's vault, Valmont at first rejects the idea because it would risk the sinking of the ship, but he relents because someone might have caught Jade's mayday and he knows from experience that Jackie won't remain trapped. As the Dark Hand is escaping with the Golden Dragon, Valmont remarks that while they were successful, he would have preferred if they could have done it more discreetly.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Hay Lin joins Jade in convincing Uncle to accompany them on the cruise with this tactic. Yan Lin even teases him that it's impossible for him to resist their gazes.
  • Replacement Mooks: Valmont hires the Ice Crew to replace the Enforcers.
  • This Is Reality: When Jade reluctantly agrees to Jackie's idea to send an SOS from the cruise ship, she sarcastically says that the hero making a phone call is her favorite movie part. Will replies like this.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Mama Tohru's reaction to finding out the truth about Valmont.
  • [Verb] This!: When MC Cobra, blinded by foam, cries out that he can't see, Irma quips "See this!" before taking him down with a stream of water.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Irma thinks StrikeMaster Ice is no threat at first glance. She immediately changes her mind after StrikeMaster Ice totally kicks Celeb's butt hard.
Irma: Okay... so pizza guy's got some moves.
  • Would Hit a Girl: MC Cobra outright states that he likes to ignore his mother's advice not to hit girls.
  • You Could Have Used Your Powers for Evil: Hak Foo thinks that if they weren't following the way of peace, the monks of the Zu Monastery who trained the Ice Crew could become the world's most lethal assassins.
