Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 14 E 07 The Gang Solves Global Warming

Go To

As a record-breaking heat wave overtakes Philly, the Gang plans to profit from global warming by pumping up the A/C so people will congregate at Paddy's and save energy at home.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Dee and Charlie's subplot involves Dee and Charlie buying ice for the bar instead of ordering to reduce their carbon footprint. Their first two attempts fail and Dee ends up ordering ice.
  • Buses Are for Freaks: Dee, once again, hates taking the bus.
  • Call-Back: Dee and Charlie are on the bus, where Dee ends up in front of a very familiar mouth breather... from ten seasons ago.
  • Continuity Nod: Fish factory guys come to Paddy's. Mac mentions they go to his church.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Late in the episode, Dennis tries bringing the party down in order to keep the power and what little AC and alcohol they have left (similar to conserving global resources), all of the upper-middle class customers refuse to make any sacrifices and even attack Dennis and Mac for the rest of the alcohol (like American consumer culture), while the working class factory workers are content to nurse their drinks in their flooding, trash-filled corner of the bar.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Charlie suggests taking the bus back to the bar, but Dee hates buses, so she orders a rideshare. She says rideshares are better because it's more fuel-efficient to take multiple people to different destinations in the same vehicle. Charlie points out that that's exactly what a bus is, except buses have more room. Dee's response is a knee-jerk "Buses Are for Freaks" said as loudly as possible and they end up taking a rideshare.
  • Fanservice: The bar is full of young, attractive people in their underwear, glistening with sweat. Even Mac and Dennis get shirtless, looking pretty good for their age.
  • Fan Disservice: Unfortunately, Frank also joins in too.
  • Foreshadowing: Frank mentions riots occurring when people don't get what they want. This happens when Dennis tries to convince the bar patrons to conserve their resources.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction:
Dee: That driver gave me one star, citing "verbal abuse" and saying I urinated all over the back seat of his car. That was melted ice!
Charlie: Actually, I did pee back there a little bit.
Dee: I did too. It was a very long ride.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Dennis gets mobbed when he thinks he can control everything, and Charlie was secretly filming Dee being horrible to service workers the whole time and posting it on her Instagram feed, inevitably driving away what few followers she might have.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Frank dislikes the Asian workers, but refuses to get rid of them due to the other option being dealing with women. Mac states "his misogyny is stronger than his racism."
  • Precision F-Strike: Mac does this while questioning Dee. It also nonchalantly slips out during the dance party.
Frank: Global warming is the fucking best!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mac and Frank move out of the way of the bar when it becomes clear the crowd is about to rush it and overwhelm Dennis.
  • Special Edition Title: "The Heat is On" by Glenn Frey replaces the normal theme over the opening credits.
  • Spiteful Spit: Dee spits on a man for breathing too close to her on the bus.
