Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 07 E 13 The High School Reunion Part 2

Go To

"I used to be king of the mountain top. Now I'm sitting alone at a table at my high school reunion with my sister, the Aluminum Monster."
— Dennis

The gang decide to get revenge after being shunned by the popular clique at their high school reunion, putting their mysterious "Plan B" into motion. (Part 2 of 2)

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Badass Boast:
    Mac: Our conductor's insane...
    Charlie: ...Our cargo is pain...
    Both: ...Freight Train!
  • Bait-and-Switch: Their big dance number at the end is pretty spectacular with music, lights and tight choreography, and it seems the crowd is enjoying it. That sets up a reveal it was all in their head and the lights were dim, music barely audible from a portable stereo and they were all sweaty and gross doing their own thing.
  • Big Man on Campus: Subverted. After an episode and a half of beliving he was this in high school and confused of people not treating him as such, Dennis is informed he was nothing but a pathetic loser.
  • Blatant Lies: Attempting to get back in their good graces, Dee claims that she was always secretly on Mac and Charlie's side. This is despite the fact that she was an active participant in their wedgies.
  • Break the Haughty: After years of basking in the memories of his days as the Big Man on Campus, Dennis learns that he was never popular, just deluded. He doesn't take it well.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Dennis mentioned in a seemingly throwaway line back "The ANTI-Social Network" that he might hypothetically be the kind of guy who has a trunk full of zip-ties and duct-tape. Five episodes later, we find out that he actually does.
    • Mac states near the beginning of the episode that Schmitty will probably swoop in at the end of the night and go home with the drunkest girl at the party. At the very end, he does exactly that, appearing out of nowhere to carry off the Waitress.
  • Call-Back: Dennis once again starts screaming about the people who slighted him being "savages!" and "idiots!"
  • Camp Straight: When Dennis insists that he isn't gay, Christie points out that he's wearing makeup... and a girdle.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Frank mentioned back in part 1 that he had Dee's old back brace in the car. She ends up having to wear it after throwing her back out when the guys give her an atomic wedgie.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: Several more characters who were previously mentioned to have gone to high school put in appearances, most notably Ingrid Nelson, Schmitty and a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo from Jimmy Doyle.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • It's stated that one of the old members of Mac and Charlie's gang was some guy named Dooley, who appears to be dead. In Dennis and Dee's Mom Is Dead", the guys mention an old friend of theirs called Dooley who apparently committed suicide.
    • Dennis tries to explain his system of seduction to Tim Murphy's wife.
    • Mac mentions Schmitty, and Charlie can barely hide his contempt.
  • Dancing Is Serious Business: Played for laughs.
Dennis: Will you stop whispering "Plan B" like it's some super-covert CIA operation? Plan B is a dance routine. It's a goddamn dance routine!
    Charlie: And it's gonna rock.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Both Dennis and Dee admit that making fun of Ingrid Nelson mostly just feels pathetic and mean, since she isn't fat anymore.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Dennis is baffled by the fact Tim's wife won't sleep with him after he outright states he's trying to manipulate her.
  • Fan Disservice: Mac covered in sweat with his bloated gut hanging out after he rips his shirt open during the gang's big dance number.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Mac calling Ingrid Nelson "Fatty Magoo".
Ingrid: I had a thyroid problem. What's your excuse?
  • I Am a Humanitarian: Ingrid claims that "Psycho" Pete, the leader of Mac and Charlie's old gang, was arrested for killing and eating his own family on Christmas day. Apparently he got out of prison by pleading insanity.
  • Jaded Washout: Dennis had convinced himself he was a "Golden God" in high school and was riding that confidence his entire life. He learns that no one liked him because he just wandered around acting like he was in charge and everyone else beneath him. He does not take this well and turns into this trope in an instant.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Charlie, Mac and Frank give Dee an atomic wedgie as revenge for her doing the same to them in the previous episode. Moreover, Dee is forced to wear the back brace she wore in high school after mocking Ingrid Nelson for being fat in high school.
  • Metaphorgotten:
Frank: If you're dealt a bunch of lemons, you gotta take those lemons and stuff them down somebody's throat until they see yellow!
  • Mistaken for Gay: Tim Murphy's wife initially fails to realize that Dennis is hitting on her because she assumes that he's gay.
  • By "No", I Mean "Yes": When Dennis confronts Mac over having sex with his date, Mac lies about it, for maybe two seconds.
Dennis: You slept with my prom date?
    Mac: No... Yes.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted; Schmitty's first name is revealed to be Peter, the same as that of Psycho Pete.
  • The Reveal: Turns out that Dennis was never popular in high school. He was just delusional and would boast about being a "Golden God" to everyone before going to hang out with Mac and Charlie. Also, Tim Murphy didn't sleep with Dennis's prom date — Mac did.
Dennis: How could you do that to me?
  • Reunion Revenge: The gang attempt to get their revenge on the popular crowd, first of all by challenging them to a fight and then with a dance routine. They fail both times.
  • Rite of Passage: Charlie claims that Dee has to go through one of these before joining Freight Train. In turns out that this is just an excuse to give her a wedgie, however.
  • Rousing Speech: Frank starts giving one when the rest of the gang want to call it quits and head back to the bar, only to lose his train of thought and start spouting his usual gibberish right when he gets to the important part.
  • Running Gag: Charlie once again offers his legal advice and claims to be an expert in "bird law".
  • Self-Serving Memory:
    • Dennis's insistence that he was the most popular kid in school is revealed to be entirely in his own mind; in reality, he was just as much of a loser as Mac and Charlie but insisted that he was a "golden god".
    • Also, the gang see their dance routine as a choreographed number, when to everybody watching it looks like a chaotic mess.
  • The Sociopath: After Dennis is rejected by Tim Murphy's wife, he storms out to his car and starts gathering duct-tape and zip-ties from a secret compartment in the trunk, ranting about how he's going to "make them pay". The rest of the gang are visibly disturbed by this.
Mac: Dude, what's all that stuff you're grabbing?
Dennis: TOOLS! Tools! This is my duct-tape, zip-ties and gloves! I HAVE TO HAVE MY TOOLS!!
Charlie: ...Why do you have, like, a bunch of weird tools in a hidden compartment in your car?
Dennis: Fetish, fetish shit! I...I like to bind, I like to be bound! ... Uh, that's not important, don't ask me questions! I'm not taking questions! THE GOLDEN GOD IS NOT TAKING QUESTIONS! I AM THE GOLDEN GOD!!
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Dennis's repeated claims that he was a golden god in high school, unaware that the actual cool kids were laughing at him behind his back.
Adriano: You would just come around saying some weird shit about being a "golden god" or some other insane crap and referring to all of us as your minions.
Tim: You always acted like you were better than everybody else, but then you'd just go and you'd hang out with Ronnie the Rat or Dirtgrub under the bleachers or behind a dumpster or something. It was really weird.
  • Team Power Walk: The gang do this when they march back into the school to declare their revenge on the popular kids.
  • Time for Plan B: The gang put their plan B dance routine into motion after their first attempt at revenge fails.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Dennis has one after Christie rejects him, crushing his already dented ego even further.
Dennis: You know, Tim does not deserve to be the king of the mountain top. I AM THE KING OF THE MOUNTAIN TOP! I... REIGN SUPREME OVER EVERYONE IN THIS SCHOOL! I AM THE GOLDEN GOD OF THIS PLACE! I REIGN SUPREME!! I!!! ... I!!!!
    • And it continues when he rushes out to retrieve his "tools"...
Dennis: SONAVABITCH! FUCKING BASTARD! YOU BASTARD...!
Mac: Woah, Jesus Christ! Dennis, you're comin' out hot!
Dennis: I am the king of the minions! NOT Tim Murphy! NOT THAT JERKOFF! IDIOT!! (angry squeal) JERKOFF!!!
Frank: What the Hell are ya doin', man?
Dennis: She [Tim's wife Christy] rejected me! ME, FRANK, ME! THE COOLEST GUY IN THE HISTORY OF THIS GODDAMN SCHOOL!! Oh, they're all gonna pay! THEY'RE ALL GONNA PAY THE ULTIMATE PRIIIIICCCE!!!!
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Frank pukes into an ice bucket after the gang finish their dance number.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: A very drunk and depressed Waitress announces that she's going to sleep with the next person who talks to her. Charlie is just about to say something when Schmitty appears out of nowhere and gets in there first.
  • You Are Fat: When Dennis finds out that Mac was the one who slept with his prom date.
Dennis: I'M GONNA KILL YOU, YOU FAT PIECE OF SHIT!
Mac: THIS IS MASS! THIS IS MASS! DON'T MAKE IT ABOUT MY WEIGHT!
