Recap / Iron Fist (2017) S1E4 "Eight Diagram Dragon Palm"

Go To

Danny tries to interfere in the business side of Rand, and Colleen fights in the underground club. Danny gets closer to Harold, while Ward tries to warn him off.

  • After-Action Patch-Up: Used for the usual Ship Tease when Danny reduces Colleen's dislocated finger, with Joy positioned between them for Rule of Symbolism.
  • Back from the Dead: Harold really did die, he was resurrected by the Hand.
  • Bait the Dog: Harold takes Danny into his home and tries to present himself as a victim of the Hand. Ward, however, warns Danny to be suspicious around him.
  • Blatant Lies: Harold's innocent act with Danny is an obvious attempt to manipulate him even before we see him execute a man while dressed as a Hand assassin.
  • Blindfolded Trip: Subverted when Harold is just taken to see his daughter, from the building opposite.
  • Blood Knight: Despite feeling ashamed of her prize-fighting, Colleen returns again to the ring, taking on two opponents and beating on them in a frenzy. Even though she's ostensibly doing this for the money, she turns down Danny's offer of payment for the time he stayed at the dojo.
  • Call-Back:
    • Ward says Danny was climbing buildings as if he was goddamned Daredevil.
    • Jennifer Many, the reporter that does the one-on-one interview of Ward, is from the New York Bulletin, and while she's leaving the office, she's on the phone with Mitchell Ellison, telling him to bump one of Karen Page's pieces off the front page in favor of her piece on Rand Enterprises.
    • It seems that Harold has acquired Wilson Fisk's "Rabbit in a Snowstorm" painting.
    • Someone leaves a container containing a packet of heroin with the same symbol stamped on it that Madame Gao's operation used in Daredevil. A Reveal Shot shows a similar symbol tattooed Danny's chest.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Joy tells Colleen that the Rands and Meachums were so close that it was joked that she and Danny were pledged to be married when they grew up. Nothing seems to have actually been made between Danny and Joy, however.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Unlike the previous episode, Colleen wins her cagematch quite easily this time. And against two opponents at once even.
    • Danny hands the Triads sent to kidnap Joy their asses quite easily.
  • The Dreaded: Danny tells the Hatchet-Men they are to never go after Joy again, and that they were forced to buy the pier. Yang Hai-Qing asks who could force someone to make Rand Enterprises buy a pier against their will. When Danny says that it was the Hand, Yang and his guards have a Mass "Oh, Crap!" and immediately apologize, saying they will never trouble Joy again.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Ward is somehow convinced that Danny costing the company money to save lives will turn the public against him. Naturally, Jennifer turns it against him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Ward is obviously very jealous of his father treating Danny more like a son than himself.
  • Hallway Fight: Danny takes on a group of triads in the hallway of the hotel he's staying at when they try to snatch Joy. It leads directly into an Elevator Action Sequence.
  • Hidden Depths: Danny proves surprisingly adroit at handling the press. When he's questioned about his stay at a psychiatric facility, at first Joy is convinced he's about to be skewered. Instead he turns it into a heart-warming story of being overwhelmed on his return to the city and lovingly given care by Joy and Ward.
  • Hypocrite: Colleen admits being one to her students after a cellphone video showing her cage fight from the previous episode leaks on YouTube, since she criticized Daryl for wanting to do the same for money.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Ward snidely remarks that Danny's tie might be "a touch effeminate". This coming from a guy who also has been seen wearing a bunch of purple ties in several episodes up to this point.
  • Internal Reveal: Danny learns that Harold is alive.
  • I See Them, Too: When Danny awakes in Harold's penthouse, the first thing he does is confirm that Ward can see Harold as well.
  • Insistent Terminology: Seems to be a Character Tic for Danny. He's a billionaire, not a millionaire. The Triad goons were wielding hatchets, not axes.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Jeri works hard to maintain the façade of the heartless shark that we saw in Jessica Jones (2015), and there's a lot of truth to it. We saw her let her guard down with Danny's surprise reappearance making her blink back tears and the fact that she keeps the Rand family grave maintained, but when Danny calls her J-Money and tries to hug her she firmly puts a stop to it. "We don't do that."
  • Made of Iron: A hatchet blade shatters against Danny's Iron Fist.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • When entering the fighting ring, Colleen is dressed in a all-white suit, like the one she uses in comics (without a hoodie).
    • Jimmy Pierce, one of Colleen's opponents in the ring, appeared in the Punisher comics as a vigilante nicknamed the Hitman Punisher.
    • The final shot focuses on a shirtless Danny finally revealing the iconic dragon chest tattoo.
  • Neutral Female: Joy gets in a punch during the Elevator Action Sequence, but mostly she huddles behind Danny and lets him do the fighting. Justified in this case; Joy has no training and she'd either get in his way or get in the way of a swung hatchet in the dark cramped space.
  • No Social Skills: It becomes very clear how out of touch with society Danny is, especially during his first board meeting, where he comes in late and then loudly drags a chair across the whole room just to sit next to Joy.
  • Oh, Crap!: When the Triad Boss hears that the Hand is the reason for their disadvantageous deal with the Meachums, he immediately backs down in fear. He even sends Danny a bit of info on the Hand's activities as an apology.
  • On Three: Turns out even mysterious warrior monks from another dimension do the "On One" trick.
  • Papa Wolf: When Harold is allowed to see Joy for the first time since she was a child, he notices someone hit her face (from the earlier scuffle with the Triads). He requests a favor from Gao: to split open the attacker's skull with a sword.
  • Pet the Dog: For his faithful service, Harold is allowed by Madame Gao to see his daughter for the first time in years.
  • Replacement Goldfish: On the elevator ride down from the penthouse, Ward warns Danny to not see Harold as a replacement for Wendell, as Harold only cares about himself.
  • The Reveal: The Steel Serpent sign that Madame Gao has been using to sell her heroin is based on the Shou-Lao tattoo that the Iron Fist has on his chest.
  • Rule of Cool: The Triad gang is armed with hatchets like something out of the Tong Wars of the 19th Century, so Danny can look cool while dodging them instead of bullets.
  • Saved by the Platform Below: Happens twice; first Danny is able to grab onto a light pole sticking out from the side of the building, then he falls onto a ledge and knocks himself unconscious.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Madame Gao and her men enter Harold's penthouse within moments and completely unseen.
  • Survival Mantra: While clinging for dear life to a light fixture on the side of a skyscraper, Danny recites the Iron Fist's Badass Creed. He falls anyway.
  • Training from Hell: Danny tells Joy a few things about his life and training in the monastery. Joy notes it sounds more like abuse than anything.
  • The Triads and the Tongs: Danny fights a gang of Chinese hatchetmen that tries and fails to kidnap Joy in the penthouse because she undid the pier's deal with it previous tenant, who was working with the Triads.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Danny is outraged by the board trying to sell medicine against leishmaniasis at a higher price and forces them to sell it at cost, possibly costing the company millions of dollars.
  • What Would X Do?: Invoked by Ward who claims he folded on the Danny litigation case because he was just doing what Dad would have wanted. Which is literally true. He also worked out that his sister gave Jeri the clay pot which proved her case.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: As Harold lies to Danny and draws him into his deceit, Ward just shakes his head and rolls his eyes over and over.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Colleen's students are watching a cell phone video of her cage match from the last episode. Colleen walks over and takes the phone away.
Colleen Wing: You know the rules about cell phones in my dojo.
