Recap / Iron Fist (2017) S1E11 "Lead Horse Back to Stable"

Go To

Danny tries to fix his damaged chi and find his place in the world, while Colleen deals with conflicting information.

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Non-verbal example. Davos asks what is keeping Danny in New York, just as Danny sees Colleen escaping from the Hand's compound.
  • Awful Truth: Colleen finally learns that the Hand really is as evil as Danny and Claire have been telling her.
  • Back-Alley Doctor: Claire again; unfortunately she's run out of medical supplies from all the vigilantes she's been patching up.
  • The Bait: Joy plans to shut down the Hand's accounts held by the Rand Corporation, to draw Bakuto out of the compound so he can be killed.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Danny finally forgives Colleen for lying to him and takes her back, but Colleen is left visibly traumatized by learning the truth about Bakuto and the Hand.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Danny's main argument is that K'un-L'un is good and the Hand is evil no matter what. However, he shows signs of moving out of this mindset, unlike Davos.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Bakuto and the Hand are this to Colleen after she learns the Awful Truth about what the Hand really is.
    • Colleen's former students are so fanatical in their loyalty to the Hand that they see Colleen as this.
    • Davos also apparently sees Danny as this during the final scene, looking on with disapproval and leaving when Danny hugs Colleen, a member of the Hand.
  • Call-Back:
    • Davos reveals he found Danny by just using the Internet, like the hobo in Episode One mentioned anyone could do. Justified since Davos reminds Danny that he always told Davos about the internet when they were in K'un-L'un.
    • The importance of the hawk Danny kept seeing in the first few episodes is explained.
    • Claire recalls how the Hand attacked her hospital and killed a fellow nurse in Season 2 of Daredevil
    • Claire gives Danny a shirt that a "friend" left behind. Danny notes that it has bulletholes in it and wonders if this friend is okay.
    • She also has an wry look when a superhero again asks to borrow her car.
    • Bakuto mentions the Incident again, while listing the people who were helped by the Hand.
    • When Bakuto sentences Colleen to death, she's taken to a chamber in the basement where it's implied that they're going to drain her blood, which Nobu was doing in Season 2 of Daredevil with a group of drug-addicted and homeless kids.
  • Comically Missing the Point: After mentioning the time when Danny and Davos accidentally saw Lei Kung during his private meditations while naked, Danny asks if Davos if he ever thought his father was wrong, meaning choosing Danny to face Shou Lao. Davos assumes they're still talking about the meditation.
Danny: Do you ever think that the Thunderer was wrong? About certain things?
Davos: We all meditate in private in our own ways.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Colleen is torn by between her feelings for Danny and her loyalty to Bakuto. Ultimately, she puts Danny first. Likewise, Danny is torn between his loyalty to K'un Lun and Colleen.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Claire mentions that she doesn't have any antibiotics on hand because would-be superheroes and vigilantes keep turning up half-dead at her apartment.
    • Danny refuses to let Davos drive because he doesn't have a driver's license. Davos points out that Danny doesn't have a license either, given that his prior experience involves driving a donkey cart. Danny replies that he can get away with it because he's rich.
  • Cooldown Hug: Danny pulls Colleen into one after getting her out of her attempt at Suicide by Cop.
  • Deadly Delivery: Played with when Claire goes to get the pizza she ordered, leaving Davos behind out of fear he might assume this trope and kung fu an innocent delivery guy. It turns out to be Colleen holding the pizza box (having already paid off the delivery guy) but she's only there to talk.
  • Designated Girl Fight: When Colleen is fighting her former students Mary and Brian, Mary manages to put up a decent fight against Colleen, while Brian goes down with a broken arm pretty easily.
  • Despair Event Horizon:
    • Colleen's betrayal and the fact that he's lost everything has left Danny with only the desire to destroy the Hand.
    • Colleen later crosses it when the Hand tries to have her killed, briefly attempting Suicide by Cop with Danny.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted; Danny is furious with Colleen for lying to him about being part of the Hand and initially wanted nothing more to do with her. Danny later forgives Colleen while pulling her out of her Despair Event Horizon.
  • The Fettered: Joy is pretty shocked when she learns that both Danny and his father plan on murdering Bakuto rather than arresting him.
  • The Fundamentalist: Colleen accuses the Order of the Crane Mother of being fanatics. Later, she learns that Bakuto has turned her former students into these.
  • Give Me a Sign: Danny saw a hawk flying down the valley and realised the path to K'un-L'un was now open. He regarded this as a sign that he had to leave, but Davos points out it was also a sign that K'un-L'un was now vulnerable to the outside world, especially without the Iron Fist guarding the pass.
  • Incest Subtext: Joy looks rather creeped out over how her father keeps touching her in affectionate ways that seem inappropriate now his daughter is a grown woman.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: Danny insists that Davos check the perimeter (again!) because he wants to tell Claire about Colleen without his friend hearing the embarrassing fact that his girlfriend was in the Hand. Davos obeys though he's clearly annoyed. When Claire wants to have a private word with Danny later, she just politely asks for a private moment with Danny, and Davos gives it without issue.
  • Internal Reveal: Claire learns about Colleen being in the Hand.
  • Ironic Echo:
    • "It's not what I thought it was". Said by Danny when Davos finds him after the trial of Shou-Lao, and later by Colleen when she finds out that the Hand really is as evil as Danny and Claire have been telling her.
    • Danny starts Suddenly Shouting when Claire suggests that Colleen might have been brainwashed. Of course that's exactly what Colleen suggested about him.
  • Invulnerable Knuckles: Harold hits a punching bag until it bursts and his knuckles are bleeding. He doesn't seem bothered by this.
  • Just Following Orders: How Becca and the rest of Colleen's former students justify betraying her to Bakuto.
  • Meatgrinder Surgery: Having lost her job at the hospital, Claire now patches up superheroes with whatever she can find at home. Like a staple gun.
  • Mr. Exposition: Davos is this, explaining a lot about K'un-L'un and the intricacies of the Iron Fist to Claire.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite claiming that the western food is poison for the body and soul, Davos, actually tries some Pizza.
    Davos: ...it's not...it's not horrible.
  • Not So Stoic: Davos, calm and collected for most of the time, at one points breaks into a rage during his dialogue with Claire, still resenting Danny for abandoning them.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Danny has one when he realizes Claire is going to close his wound with a staple gun.
    • Colleen has one when she's sees all the cages and blood draining equipment in the basement of the Hand compound.
  • One Size Fits All: Don't get me wrong, they're both damn fit, but there's no way in hell Finn Jones and Mike Colter wear anything like the same size shirt.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Danny sees Colleen escaping from the Hand compound, he realizes it means something is very wrong, and goes after her.
  • Outdoor Bath Peeping: Davos and Danny reminisce about a time they took a donkey cart along the lake road hoping to see the girls bathing. Instead all they saw was Davos' father during his "private meditations. Nude."
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • Claire tells Danny to calm the f- down.
    • Danny yells "Sh-t!" the first time Claire puts a staple into him.
  • Principles Zealot: Danny initally does not want to listen to anything Colleen says, once again emphasizing that he is the Iron Fist, sworn destroyer of the Hand.
  • Redemption in the Rain: Colleen and Danny reconcile in the rain.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: Colleen tries to explain to Claire and Danny that the Hand has different groups with different philosophies, saying that Gao's faction is rogue while Bakuto and Colleen's is trying to help people. It's not.
  • The Resenter: Davos admits to feelings of resentment over Danny becoming the Iron Fist, which he assumed was his destiny. He was able to cope until Danny abandoned them; this naturally causes Davos to wonder if his father was wrong in selecting Danny in the first place.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Danny is firmly on one now, vowing to not leave New York until the Hand is completely wiped out.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Claire suggests that if the Hand has a renegade faction that's discrediting them, they might want to change their name to something different, like The Ear or The Arm.
  • Shout-Out: When Davos is telling Claire about Shou Lao, Claire asks if he's a little thing like a Komodo Dragon, or like Petes Dragon.
Davos: I don't know who Pete is. But think "infinite."
  • Silence, You Fool!: Done by Bakuto to shut Colleen up when she questions him and by Harold when Joy questions him.
  • Suicide by Cop: Colleen attempts to goad Danny into killing her after her Despair Event Horizon.
Danny: I'm not here to hurt you!
Colleen: Why not?! You're the destroyer of the Hand! I'm the Hand! So light up your damn fist and destroy me!
  • Tastes Like Friendship: Claire bonds with Davos over tea and pizza.
  • Trauma Conga Line: This episode has one of the worst days of Colleen Wing's life. Rejected by Danny, betrayed by her own students, sentenced to death by Bakuto, and learning the Awful Truth about the Hand takes such a toll on her that she seriously attempts Suicide by Cop.
  • The Unreveal: We are never shown what lies in the cave where Danny became the Iron Fist.
  • Use Your Head: Colleen employs this against one of her former pupils to escape her execution by blood-draining at the Hand compound.
Mary: What was it you used to say, sensei? A single arrow is easily broken? (leans close) Because right now, you look pretty broken to me. (Colleen headbutts Mary in the nose)
  • We Have to Get the Bullet Out!: Or rather, the knife tip in Danny's case.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Claire is naturally very pissed off to learn that Colleen is in the Hand, pointing out that they killed a friend of Claire's.
  • You Have Failed Me: Bakuto sentences Colleen to be drained to death for not helping in finding Danny.
