- Achievements in Ignorance: Zim never realizes Dib is spying on him, but he foils his nemesis' latest scheme to expose him when his reprogrammed cyborgs just randomly break into Dib's room and destroy all his monitoring equipment.
- Biting-the-Hand Humor: Zim, it turns out, has a test subject called Nick, who is constantly forced to be happy and wears the Nickelodeon logo on his shirt. This is a Take That! towards Nickelodeon executives who were consistently complaining about how dark Invader Zim was.
- Body Horror: Even a deliberately banal episode of Invader Zim has time to engage in this. Zim's prisoner Nick has a giant spike in the top of his head that goes into his brain.
- Bottle Episode: Aside from the first scene, where Dib tricks GIR into planting the spy cameras for him, the whole episode is built around Zim having breakfast in his kitchen, and Dib spying on him from his room.
- Butt-Monkey: Every time something remarkable happens it's gone the minute Dib is able to get someone to look at it and once it his computer finally starts recording it, a bunch of robots come in a break then just leave.
- Getting Smilies Painted on Your Soul: Zim and Nick provide the page quote.
- Mundane Made Awesome: Subverted with the episode itself, as Zim eating waffles is deliberately made to be as banal as possible, but played straight with the opening credits, done in flashy CGI as the camera flies through space down to Earth.
- Shaped Like Itself: Zim asks what the waffles are made of. GIR says they've "got waffle in 'em."
- Stopped Caring: After his attempt to spy on Zim yields absolutely no fruit and some cyborgs bust into his room and destroy all his equipment, Dib lets out a tormented "NOOOOOOOO," before cutting it short to grumpily mumble "Whatever," and go to bed, too frustrated to even care anymore.
- The Unreveal: What was Zim's evil plan? Neither we nor Dib will ever know because by the end of the episode, he completely forgot what it was.
- Villains Out Shopping: Despite being an insane alien invader out to conquer Earth, Zim spends his morning eating breakfast and reading the paper, just like anyone else.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: Zim throws up off-camera after eating too many waffles at the end."GIR, your waffles have sickened me! Fetch me the bucket!"
