Professional photographer Adrian's 20-year marriage to Harriet (Nicola Walker) is going stale despite her efforts to inject some romance into it. For a birthday treat she organizes a trip to Paris for them but the terrible secret his darkroom is hiding makes him unwilling to go.

- The Cobbler's Children Have No Shoes: Adrian spends his life taking happy photographs of other couples' weddings but is completely apathetic to his own marriage falling apart.
- Complete-the-Quote Title: The title is lifted from the marriage vow "to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death".
- The Dog Bites Back: Adrian thinks he's doing this when he kidnaps and assaults Agnes due to Harriet's cheating, but a much clearer example is when Harriet and Agnes chain Adrian up in the basement.
- Door-Closes Ending: The episode ends with the prison door closing on Adrian.
- Emasculated Cuckold: Adrian feels like one after Harriet cheats on him and is extremely unreceptive to Harriet's efforts to resume their sex life.
- Ethnic Menial Labour: Agnes.
- Fate Worse than Death: Harriet intends to keep Adrian chained up where he kept Agnes until one of them dies. And if he crippled himself in some fashion falling down the stairs, he's unable to do anything about it. It's also implied that Agnes feels this way about being imprisoned and raped in the basement.
- Insatiable Newlyweds: Suggested with Hannah and Max, the giggly young couple whose wedding Adrian recently photographed and who can't keep their hands off each other.
- The Jailer: Adrian. Later this job falls onto Harriet, Agnes and her son.
- Kicking My Own Butt: Adrian performs a Staircase Tumble on purpose so he would not have to leave for Paris. Or to commit suicide. It's not entirely clear.
- Kinky Role-Playing: The couple engages in role plays to get the husband's lions up again. In one scene Harriet slips into a Naughty Nurse Outfit and starts massaging Adrian in pivotal areas. It doesn't work. The dark twist later reveals that Adrian's impotence is caused by him routinely engaging in sex with a female sex slave he keeps in a Secret Room behind the basement.
- The Loins Sleep Tonight: What happens when Adrian and Harriet attempt roleplay.
- Lousy Lovers Are Losers: Adrian and Harriet's relationship is totally dead following her affair. Despite her best efforts to liven things up, Adrian is totally impotent, and is The Bore to boot. And then the real reason for his impotency is revealed: he's imprisoned a woman as his Sex Slave in the basement.

- Meaningful Titles: Harriet intends to literally "have and hold" Adrian (in the basement) until one of them dies.
- Mood Whiplash: The story changes from domestic drama to horror very quickly with the revelation that Adrian is keeping someone prisoner inside the basement.
- Naughty Nurse Outfit: Harriet thinks one of these might revive her marriage. It doesn't.
- Secret Room: The basement has a secret room in which Adrian keeps Agnes hidden for years.
- Sex Slave: Adrian kept Agnes as one.
- Sexual Karma: Hannah and Max are Insatiable Newlyweds while Adrian is a rapist who can't get it up.
- Shout-Out: Harriet mentions Whose Line Is It Anyway? in passing.
- Skewed Priorities: Upon hearing that Adrian has died, Max's response is to "subtly" try to ask Harriet if he can buy her house.
- A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Adrian kept Agnes chained up as a sex slave in the basement, and ends the episode chained up himself, presumably until either he or Harriet dies.
- Two-Act Structure: Starts out as a kitchen sink drama about a failing marriage, before it reveals that Adrian is keeping a Sex Slave in his basement.
- They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: Adrian seems completely normal but is a despicable rapist.
- Trademark Favourite Food: Pot Noodles for Adrian. Subverted when it emerges that he's been giving them to his sex slave and son hidden in the basement.
- Wham Line: The sound of Agnes's voice asking Max and Hannah to "follow her" reveals that Harriet found her.
- Wham Shot: The shot of a hand reaching out from the basement for the Pot Noodle as Adrian unzips his trousers.
