Recap / Il Etait Une Fois Man E 03 Cro Magnon Man

Go To

Original French Title: Le Cro-Magnon

Setting: 35,000 BC to 10,000 BC

During the Ice Age, we see Maestro, Pierre, Pierrette, Jumbo, Teigneux, and Nabot in their modern forms. Here, they learn to make tools out of flint, to fish using hooks, to paint themselves with colored dirt, and to work as a team when hunting mammoths.

Tropes:

  • Butt-Monkey: Nabot's attempts to recreate the methods of Pierre's tribe fail him. For example, his flint knife causes one of Teigneux's teeth to fall out, and he can't catch any fish with his fishing pole, so he tries it by hand, only to get bitten by a piranha.
  • Compressed Adaptation: The Comic-Book Adaptation combines this episode with "And Earth Was Created" and "Neanderthal Man."
  • Cranial Eruption: One scene has a three-fer for Pierre, Jumbo, and Maestro while they are out hunting a bison. Pierre tries luring the bison by dressing up like a female, but Jumbo accidentally hits him on the head. Then, when the kids try making a giant slingshot, Little Jumbo ends up accidentally hitting Jumbo on the head. Maestro then offers to act as the projectile, and when he does, he hits the bison on the head. When Pierre, Jumbo, and Maestro see their matching Cranial Eruptions, they all laugh together.
    • Later in the episode, when Teigneux and Nabot are old men, they get pottery thrown on their heads, resulting in each of them having a Cranial Eruption on top of a Cranial Eruption.
  • Epic Fail: Nabot's attempt at building a raft falls apart and causes Teigneux to fall into the lake.
  • Face Palm: Little Jumbo does this as his father hits Pierre on the head during a bison hunt (Pierre is dressed like a female bison).
  • Love at First Sight: As in the previous episode, Young Pierrette falls in love with a man from Teigneux's tribe.
  • Mammoths Mean Ice Age: Naturally, an episode set in the Ice Age features woolly mammoths.
  • Noble Savage: Played straight with Pierre's tribe, as in the previous episode.
  • Sequel Hook: "Has man reached maturity? If not, how long will it take him?"
  • Tender Tears: Young Pierrette crying over a lonely cow. This moves Maestro into finding a bull for the cow and making the girl happy.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Towards the end of the episode, Teigneux has gotten older, but evidently not wiser. His attempt to release Maestro and Pierre's cattle back into the wild goes horribly right when he shouts at them. The angered cattle trample him into the ground!
  • Tribal Face Paint: Invoked by Maestro. When he and Pierrot find some red dirt, he proposes that Pierre's tribe uses it to decorate their leader, his wife, and their dead.
