- Mario & Sonic team up together to defeat the military and save the world (?)
- Breaking Old Trends: This is the first "If Mario was in" episode not to be based on a video game.
- Gone Horribly Right: Swagmaster was supposed to fall in love with the disguised Sonic then Sonic would tell Swag to convince the government to stop hunting him. Because of Eggman's intervention, it ends up leading to Swagmaster realizing that he actually loves Sonic and refuses to kill him because "it's the inside that counts" and decides to make out with Sonic. Hey, at least the government isn't after him anymore!
- Halfway Plot Switch: The episode started out as having a similar plot to the Sonic Movie with Sonic getting in trouble with the government for knocking out the world's power and the government hiring Eggman for help. Then it turns into a Valentines Day episode. SMG4 only realizes after the video ended that it was supposed to be focused on being about the Sonic Movie, then hastily wishes everyone a "Happy Valentines Day."
- Ho Yay: It starts out as Sonic being Disguised in Drag to convince Swag to stop hunting him, but when his identity is revealed, Swag remains in love with him (and insists that it's no homo).
- Insistent Terminology: no homo.
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Sonic is Disguised in Drag (read: a single wig) and needs for Swag to love him to convince him to stop hunting him. When Eggman removes Sonic's disguise, Swag discovers that it's Sonic, but stays in love with him anyway.
