Recap / I Heart Arlo S 1 E 5 Community Garden

Go To

Arlo discovers a city lot where Bertie goes to have some private time, and winds up turning the whole place into a community garden.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: If someone needs private time, don't take it away from them.
  • Book Ends: The episode starts and ends with Bertie relaxing by herself.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Right when he meets up with Bertie and disturbs a nearby car, Arlo calls out, "Hi, I'm walkin' here!"
  • Break the Cutie: Bertie didn't take losing her quiet time that well.
  • Breather Episode: Unlike the previous episodes, this is the first other than the premiere that has no relation to the Uncondemning arc, and also does not have an Edmée stinger.
  • Broken Record: Arlo repeatedly shouting Bertie's name when searching for her.
  • Call-Back:
    • Arlo once again repeatedly sings Bertie's name like he did in the movie.
    • Bertie "speaking Arlo" by randomly singing her thoughts also comes from the movie when he told her the same thing which cued the "Follow Me Home" number.
  • Creation Sequence: Three occur throughout the episode. First the small fence Arlo builds around Bertie's flowers, then the larger fence built around the lot, and finally the construction of the community garden, set to Arlo's aforementioned song-and-dance number.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Bertie's room is seen for the first time, and her bed does not have the canopy drapes as it does in later episodes.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: While Arlo is calling Bertie to the roof from the skylight, Alia can be seen sitting on the glass like a cat would.
  • Foreshadowing: While searching for Bertie after she leaves the garden, Arlo passes a giant squid in an alleyway and notices a cult doing a ritual which involves an effigy doll that looks like him. A giant squid monster shows up nine episodes later, while Arlo himself faces a major crisis himself in the season finale.
  • Hard-Work Montage: The Seasiders turning the city lot into a community garden, set to Arlo's song "Communty Garden".
  • Heroic BSoD: Bertie enters one, having lost her alone time due to the community garden.
  • Idiosyncratic Wipes: Multiple occur during Arlo's song.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Arlo was blissfully unaware that rallying all the Seasiders to turn the lot into a community garden ruined Bertie's quiet time. He realizes soon after.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Bertie tells Arlo her desire for quiet time by "speaking Arlo", which is indeed, breaking into song. Arlo recognizes this as his language.
  • Mood Whiplash: The opening scene consists of back-and-fourth shots of Bertie gardening in the city lot in silence, followed by a sudden loud Jump Scare of Arlo and the others hanging out at Tony's.
  • Softer and Slower Cover: Bertie's song "Even In A Garden" is a more relaxing and calmer version of Arlo's rad and upbeat "Community Garden" number. While the latter is about others coming to do their part, the former is about the singer themselves, and how much they deserve to be themselves time to time.
  • Wingding Eyes: Tony gets dollar sign eyes as he taste tests a tomato.

I Heart Arlo

Bertie's quiet time in a city lot is interspersed with sudden loud scenes of Arlo and the rest of the gang hanging out at Tony's.

How well does it match the trope?
