Recap / I Heart Arlo S 1 E 17 Goin It Arlone

Go To

With Seaside's Uncondemning around the corner, Arlo goes to great lengths to fix up the boardwalk's old Ferris wheel as a surprise for Ansel, but bites off more than he can chew.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Though things might not go the way you planned, what matters is that you tried.
  • All There in the Script: The credits list Ol' Bessie's former operator's name as Grant.
  • Cliffhanger: Arlo telling Bertie they have a package to find.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Ol' Bessie is finally getting repaired after Arlo promising such to Ansel in "A Memory of Pizza".
    • Arlo finally receives the distress letter Edmée sent him in "Jeromio, Jeromio".
  • Creation Sequence: When Arlo is fixing Ol' Bessie.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: All of Arlo's friends have dark circles under their eyes as they are worn out from all the boardwalk work. For Arlo himself, he just has an extra wrinkle under his, in addition to the ones he always has.
  • Face Palm: Jeromio does it after Arlo leaves the room to fix Ol' Bessie.
  • From Bad to Worse: Arlo's attempt at fixing Ol' Bessie only results in Seaside becoming damaged again.
  • Hard-Work Montage:
    • One at the beginning where Arlo and the gang get Seaside ready for the Uncondemning, set to his "Coming Together" number.
    • Another where Arlo works to fix Ol' Bessie all night.
  • Heroic BSoD: Arlo enters a rather deep one when Ol' Bessie destroys the town.
  • Imagine Spot: One where Arlo surprises Ansel with the fixed Ol' Bessie wheel, complete with him mimicking their voiceovers.
  • Indy Escape: Arlo is briefly chased by Ol' Bessie when it breaks off its hinges and rolls down the boardwalk.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: A weary Alia comments it wouldn't be so tiring if they didn't dance and sing when they did all that work. Bertie also panics over another song-and-dance number in her sleep.
  • Made of Explodium: One of Ol' Bessie's gondolas somehow explodes when it falls off the wheel.
  • Mood Whiplash: After an eventful episode featuring an old Ferris wheel causing a boardwalk disaster and Arlo's friends patching in to help fix everything, the episode ends on a serious note as Arlo receives Edmée's distress letter and does not get the follow-up package which will tell him what to do.
  • Multi-Part Episode: This serves as the first part to the "Edmée's in danger" storyline, which in turn leads to the Season 1 finale.
  • No OSHA Compliance: According to Elena, Ol' Bessie was built back when the Seasiders thought it was good to construct things out of newspaper and asbestos.
  • Sequel Hook: The episode ends with Arlo getting Edmée's distress letter but not the follow-up package, realizing it's missing and rallies Bertie to find it. Continues into the next episode.
  • Smash to Black: What ends the episode, following Arlo's final line "We've got a package to find."
  • Squeaky Eyes: Twice when reacting to the ominous warnings of Ol' Bessie's former operator, Arlo blinks his tired eyes, which make faint squishing noises.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: By Bertie as Arlo is sneaking out.
Bertie: No... Not another song-and-dance number, Arlo...
  • Tears of Remorse: Arlo sheds a large amount of these during his breakdown.
  • Tempting Fate: The ghost that pops out of Ol' Bessie's manual warns Arlo, "Don't be stupid!"
  • Trash the Set: All of Seaside is reduced to its pre-restoration by the rumbling caused by the runaway Ol' Bessie.
  • Volumetric Mouth: Arlo does one when he has trouble sleeping.

Edmee's note

Arlo finally receives Edmee's distress letter, but the follow-up package does not come. Sounds like we've got a mystery on our hands!

How well does it match the trope?
