Recap / I Dream Of Jeannie S 2 E 8 How To Be A Genie In Ten Easy Lessons

Go To

Jeannie keeps accidentally making trouble for him and Tony is at his wits' end. Since Jeannie is inexperienced, Tony buys Tales From the Arabian Nights for her to read as a manual for being a helpful genie. Despite Jeannie's protests, Tony orders her to follow the book, not knowing it contains methods for torturing a master.

Tropes:

  • Agony of the Feet: While trying to get into his bedroom, Tony kicks the iron gate Jeannie erected in front of it. Naturally, this accomplishes nothing and hurts his foot in the bargain.
  • Exiled to the Couch: Following the "rules" she learned from Arabian Nights, Jeannie takes over Tony's bed and gives him an army cot with a blanket to sleep on, putting up a wall when he protests.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Tony tells Jeannie to everything exactly like the genies of Arabian Nights. Unfortunately, he hasn't read the book and doesn't know that the book is full of methods genies use to torture their masters.
  • Idiot Ball: Tony gives Jeannie The Arabian Nights as a guidebook on how genies should behave, without actually reading it. It turns out the book is full of genies torturing their masters in cruel ways.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After several days of tortures which make Tony and herself miserable, Jeannie goes to Roger for advice. He suggests she needs to find a new master. Jeannie doesn't like the idea, but agrees because she doesn't want Tony to be unhappy anymore.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Roger actually has read Arabian Nights and knows what Jeannie is putting Tony through. However, he lets it continue and even escalates it because he wants Jeannie's help and Tony wouldn't lend her to him. Once Tony finds out the truth, he has Jeannie blink Roger to an iceberg in retribution.
  • Morton's Fork: A distressed Jeannie turns up at Roger's house and says that she can't please Tony these days. Whether she follows the book or doesn't follow the book, he yells at her.
  • Never Smile at a Crocodile: When Tony orders her to do what's in chapter ten, Jeannie blinks him to a rope over a pit of hungry crocodiles. He almost loses his grip before she blinks him back home.
  • Poor Communication Kills: While Jeannie tries to warn Tony about the book's "instructions" on how to treat a master, she doesn't tell him specifics, only that he wouldn't like it. Even after Tony scolds her about what she's been doing lately, she fails to tell him that the book caused it.
  • Spikes of Doom: Very reluctantly, Jeannie follows the book and transforms Tony's mattress into a bed of nails. Fortunately, he pats it with his hand before actually lying down.
