Recap / I Carly S 02 Ep 16 I Date A Bad Boy

Go To

iDate a Bad Boy is the 16th episode in the 2nd season of iCarly.

When the apartment is robbed by a boy named Griffin, Carly is asked by Spencer to watch out for him, but she eventually starts dating him out of his concerns. He orders her not to see him, but nevertheless continues to date him, and she soon learns her new "bad boy" has an embarrassing secret.

Tropes:

  • Big Brother Instinct: Despite going easy on Griffin for stealing his motorcycle and even inviting him into their house to work on a sculpture, Spencer very understandably does not want Carly dating him due to how bad of an influence he is. When he catches them making out on his couch, he promptly throws Griffin out and forbids Carly from seeing him.
  • Dark Secret: A rather embarrassing one Played for Laughs. Carly discovers Griffin has an obsession with pee-wee babies and plays with them like a Manchild.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: When Carly and Sam are making fun of Griffin and his pee-wee babies and cracking jokes about it, Griffin happened to come along and hear the whole thing. He promptly breaks up with Carly because of it.
  • Extra-Long Episode: The second following "iGo to Japan", and the first to run a full hour unlike the latter.
  • Face Your Fears: Sam has been constantly having a nightmare that involves a monster eating her soup. Spencer is trying to help her stop having this nightmare, with little success. So, he decides this trope is in order to do the trick. He leaves Sam a bowl of soup at the Shay residence with a note telling her to eat it, and while she does so, he comes out in a monster costume going to eat her soup. Sam ends up being enraged and beats him up until he reveals it's him. This finally gives Sam the confidence of not finding that dream scary anymore. However, because of her beating Spencer up, HE begins having nightmares about it.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: Despite Spencer's objections, Carly still goes out with Griffin, even in secret. He eventually gives in and lets them date.
  • Get Out!: When Spencer catches Griffin and Carly making out when coming home, he tells the former this trope. And while he is leaving, Spencer throws a bagel for good measure.
  • I Knew It!: Though it's not elaborated on before, Freddie is implied to have thought Griffin had some sort of non-masculine characteristic or hobby. He shouts a Big "YES!" when he finds out the latter is true.
  • Imagine Spot: When Carly is about to apologize to Griffin for her mockery, she imagines pee-wee babies around him asking Carly to be with him and them on Honeymoon island. This convinces Carly to stop herself, and she and Griffin break up.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: Griffin may be a tough bad boy who gets rough every now and then, but he has a large amount of pee-wee babies that he likes to take care of. This pretty much ruins the way Carly sees him.
  • Minor Flaw, Major Breakup: Carly just can't get over Griffin's love of Pee-Wee babies. Though it's actually Griffin who breaks up with her.
  • Motor Mouth: When Carly explains to Spencer why she kissed him, she does so in a very quick and precise tone of voice.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: When he sees Griffin and Carly kissing, Spencer kicks him out of the Shay residence and he tells Carly to stay away from him; naturally, she disobeys him and keeps seeing him in secret.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Spencer is notably more strict than he usually is. Likely a result of Character Development stemming from the first season episode "iWanna Stay With Spencer."
  • Right Behind Me: Carly and Sam are laughing about Griffin's pee-wee babies. Griffin is near the door behind and sarcastically says that's very funny.
  • The Scream: Between Carly, Spencer and Griffin when Spencer comes home and finds the two kissing.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Freddie is trying to do a prank by sending Ms. Briggs an order of pizza to her house. However, this plan fails due to caller ID and him using his own phone. He promptly drops the phone and runs away, not wanting to pay for it.
  • Shout-Out: The Peewee Babies are an obvious take on Beanie Babies.
  • Take Our Word for It: The neck infection video.
  • You Are Grounded!: Spencer tells Carly she's grounded for "til college" when he sees her kissing Griffin.
