Recap / Human Resources S 02 E 05 Rochelle Rochelle

Go To

General Malice of the Hate Division approaches Rochelle to join her team full-time, prompting Rochelle to question whether to fully turn into a Lovebug or a Hate Worm. Through a split timeline narrative, the episode shows us what could happen if she chose either one.

Tropes:

  • Ass Shove: Bug-Rochelle puts her phone in her ass so it'll light up and simulate her glow. Pete implores her to give it a deep cleaning after he finds out.
  • Bait-and-Switch: The episode initially sets up the Lovebug timeline to be the better one — Rochelle and Pete form a sweet relationship, and Maury gets fit and healthy. Yet it's the Lovebug timeline that has an "Everybody Dies" Ending, and the Hate Worm timeline is the real one.
  • Brick Joke: Walter gets an Olive Garden coupon in both timelines, and points out it must be important if he said it in both timelines. Later he takes several coworkers out to Olive Garden in both timelines, lampshading, "Told y'all this would come back!"
  • Butterfly of Doom: Rochelle's status as a Lovebug or Hate Worm affects how she interacts with everyone around her, and her behavior even in seemingly insignificant situations, like whether Maury should get a giant burrito, has ripple effects. The characters even lampshade how "unimportant" these events are before we see how they actually cause great changes, some of which are ultimately fatal.
  • Call-Back: The episode opens with Rochelle angrily re-reading the vows Dante wrote back in "The Addiction Angel," which got her to fall for Dante in the first place.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Emmy takes Pete out to get drunk after they both get rejected by their respective love interests.
Pete: Emmy, you were right. Alcohol really dulls the experience of living.
Emmy: Told ya! Couple drinks, you're still sad, but couple more, you get happy, and if you keep going after that, you feel absolutely nothing.
    Pete: Can't wait.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Rochelle uses her phone to create a fake "glow" while she's having sex with Pete, making Pete's distress when he learns it wasn't real reminiscent of him learning she had a Fake Orgasm.
  • Dung Fu: Monkeys flinging shit at each other was apparently General Malice's idea.
  • "Everybody Dies" Ending: The Lovebug timeline ends with most of the main cast getting killed in a car crash, barring Rochelle (and Gil and Joe, who weren't invited to Olive Garden).
  • Fitness Nut: In the Lovebug timeline, Maury becomes obsessed with fitness after Rochelle convinces him to eat a salad. This upsets Connie, as since he gets an endorphin high from running, he doesn't need to fuck her anymore.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Right before Worm-Rochelle destroys it, we can see a whiteboard where Alice has separated people into columns like "Kill" and "Cancel." This is presumably the "list" she mentioned a couple episodes ago.
  • Hollywood Heart Attack: In the Hate Worm timeline, Maury has a sudden heart attack shortly after eating a giant burrito. It's subverted when it turns out to be "bubble guts" instead, which is just as dangerous, if not moreso.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: Pete tries to sing three words of Rochelle's song, but it comes out very shaky and off-key, prompting her to shut him down quickly.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Walter goes to Olive Garden with the crew in both timelines. It's the obstacles they face on the road, and whether they survive, that differ.
  • Let's Have Another Baby: At the end of the episode, Maury says he'd rather have another baby than keep his baby weight. Connie quickly runs off.
  • Male Frontal Nudity: In a post-coital scene with Rochelle and Pete, he's fully naked and his penis is visible in a few frames.
  • Mentally Unwell, Special Senses: Sal is a special needs kid and is shown to be aware of Rochelle's presence during Alice's video chat with his mothers.
  • Nutritional Nightmare: The 2-Day Burrito, a huge 30-pound "sleeping bag"-sized burrito meant to be eaten over two days. Maury eating it in just one day nearly causes his stomach to explode.
  • Potty Emergency: After eating a giant burrito, Maury rushes to the bathroom for a "tushy emergency."
  • Split Timelines Plot: The episode diverges into two plots based on whether Rochelle decides to be a Lovebug or Hate Worm forever.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Maury gets this in both timelines. In the Lovebug timeline, he becomes lean and muscular after dedicating more time to his health. In the Hate Worm timeline, he becomes fatter from eating the burrito.
  • Visual Pun: When Connie is "tripping balls," her pupils turn into nutsacks, and she sees everyone as nutsacks.
