The gang does a background check on a girl Ted is on a date with and discover something surprising about her. Lily and Marshall refuse to discover the sex of their baby.
This episode provides examples of:
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: One of the girls Ted was dating was wanted in Florida for crystal meth charges, bred pitbulls for dogfights, was still married with a death row convict... and didn't like Annie Hall.
- Beyond the Impossible: Robin's father, already established as an abusive asshole, moves above and beyond when we learn he once threw her out of a helicopter with nothing but a knife.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: After Ted praises Annie Hall because of Woody Allen breaking the fourth wall and talking to the camera, and says that people have been ripping it off ever since, Robin turns to the camera, asking "Can you believe this guy?".
- Call-Back: When Kevin remarks that the only unhealthy behavior the gang didn't have was physical violence, we are treated to short montage of different hits, slaps and groin attacks set to 'Murder Train'... with every hit syncing up with the music.
- Comically Missing the Point: Baaaaaaarney. "Seriously, Ted, you want to see these pictures."Ted: Those aren't Janet.
Barney: Who now? - Deadpan Snarker: Kevin finds it very difficult in this episode not to openly psycho-analyze the main characters, so he sticks to half-sarcastically talking about them under his breath.Kevin: Thaaat's what you wanna hear (while painting all the room yellow by himself). This is in no way "Emotional Extortion". You guys are great!
- Double-Meaning Title: Ted wants to know his new Girl of the Week without tracing her in Internet, while Marshall and Lily want the gender of their baby to be a surprise.
- Foregone Conclusion: It's obvious that Lily and Marshall's baby is a boy because in "Last Cigarette Ever", Future Ted said Marshall's last cigarette was "the day his son was born".
- Only Sane Man: After an entire day of watching the Gang, Kevin got disturbed by all their codependent and incestuous interactions.
- Spit Take: First Robin and Barney when they found out about Janet McIntyre. And then Kevin choked on his beer while Lily and Marshall read the article.Kevin: I can't really see the computer screen. It just went down the wrong pipe.
