Robin and Barney bond when they stop Ted from getting back together with an ex (until they run into Nora), and Marshall and Lily watch a ticking clock as he fears that he soon will be the victim of food poisoning.
The episode provides examples of:
- Crazy-Prepared: Knowing he was three hours from having a massive diarrhea wave, Marshall prepared everything for said hour: attached knee cushions, wrapped the inside of his briefcase with plastic and asked his elderly neighbour for an adult diaper.
- Dynamic Entry: How Robin and Barney stop Ted from getting back with Zoey.
- The Food Poisoning Incident: Subverted. Lily gets sick after eating a dodgy bowl of soup, leading Marshall to be paranoid that he'll also get sick after eating the same soup. However, Marshall never gets sick, and Lily's illness appears to be the result of Morning Sickness as she turns out to be pregnant.
- Nobody Poops: Averted. When Lily gets food poisoning, she tells Marshall to say "she has the flu" so nobody would imagine her doing the other stuff. Cut to the bar where Barney and Robin are joking about which end Lily is exploding from.
- Noodle Incident: We never learn what happened to Mr. Buttons 1.
- The Reveal: We finally learn who the groom is at the wedding: it's Barney.
- Romantic False Lead:
- Played for laughs. Ted hesitates about getting back together with Zoey and gives the orchid he was going to give her to an old lady, who she gives to the wrong blonde.
Future!Ted: And that, kids, is how I met your mother. [Beat] Psych! It was just some chick.- Barney and Robin momentarily stare at each other with nostalgia while talking about failed relationships with Ted. After the demolition, they walk by Nora, hinting that Barney may have a second chance with her.
- Rule of Three: How they remember Ted getting back together with his exes for minor things. First time he ran out of whipped cream for a sundae, he went out with Natalie for another 3 months. The second time he couldn't reach the worst parts of a sunburn, so he went out with Karen for another 9 months. The third time he was moved watching the news about a newborn baby panda, and Robin flat out rejected Ted before he could ask her out again.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: Lily got food poisoning in the middle of the introduction of the new class hamster. Poor Mr. Buttons 2...
- Also all the times Lily goes to vomit in the bathroom, her barfing is replaced with the sound of a roaring velociraptor.
- Wham Line: Lily reveals she is pregnant.
- Wham Shot: The groom in the wedding Ted attends as Best Man is Barney.
